St. Ives Winery: Cable, Ohio

Rolling hills and farmland led me to the small town of Cable, Ohio where I would stop by St. Ives Winery to sample their sweet wine and craft brews. The lovely countryside brought me to their tasting room, a small beige pole barn trimmed in maroon and decorated with patriot hostas and day lilies.

St. Ives is known for their meads made from local honey and their delicious ciders sourced from nearby orchards in southern Ohio. Creating a variety of options in small batches, the winery draws visitors from the surrounding counties.

The winery is owned by husband and wife team, Ryan and Heather Hostetler. They started their business in 2014 out of a love for making beer. Their journey began when Heather encouraged Ryan to purchase a home brew kit. Within six weeks, he had successfully created their first brew and the business grew to making wines as well.

I started my sampling adventure with their blush wine made from raspberries and dragonfruit. A lovely shade of pink, this blush is light and semi-sweet. Moving on to the next wine a red, made from pomegranate was incredibly crisp and refreshing. My final sample was “Your Mom’s Peach” a white wine which tasted like fresh peaches. I couldn’t resist and bought a bottle of each wine to have on hand for summer.

Sitting at the counter, a book club group of women arrived and sat at a large table ordering several bottles of wine. They had brought with them their own food and snacks and were so kind to offer me a cheese plate. The winery allows for visitors to bring in their own food and snacks and can also order pizza from a local parlor which is delivered in minutes.

A Visit to Pinellas County, Florida and Busch Gardens

I woke early to make the four and a half hour journey to St. Petersburg, Florida. I was picking up my friend Shawna to take her back to Miami. In the meantime, I was excited to meet up with another friend of mine Bill for a visit to Busch Gardens and then karaoke.

The weather was absolutely beautiful as I crossed the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Years ago, working for the cruise lines, our ship would pass under the bridge on its way to Key West. Later, while living in Tampa, I always looked forward to driving over the bridge when visiting Sarasota, Fort Myers or Sanibel Island.

Arriving in Pinellas County, I made my pilgrimage to The Frog Pond, a breakfast restaurant where I worked with my friend Theresa. We would bus tables, arriving as early as 6AM but finish the day by 2PM. Our favorite days were when Hulk Hogan would stop by with Linda for breakfast, driving up on his Hulkster. We still laugh about it to this day.

The condo where Theresa and I lived was at Gull Harbor, conveniently close to the The Frog Pond. Her father had just met his girlfriend, so when he moved in with her, he allowed us to stay at his place paying a small monthly fee. The property was beautiful with a gorgeous pool and spectacular views of North Redington Beach. I had no idea how lucky we were to live here and love to stop by each time I visit.

I had made arrangements to meet my friend Bill at Busch Gardens. We had both worked together at the Tampa Airport and he was now taking tickets at the park. When I arrived, he had a couple of additional hours to work and then we would hang out at the park riding rides and visiting the animals.

One of my favorite rides at Busch Gardens is the Skyride where I can see many of the animals in the safari park.

I remember when the Kumba first opened in 1993. There was so much hype and press covering its opening and having friends who worked at the park was the best advantage.

The SheiKra climbs 200 that slowly reaches the top the stops. The pause seems endless as you wait before diving down at 70 miles per hour. There is an Immelmann loop, a second dive into an underground tunnel and the splashdown finale where those that are waiting in line are sure to be drenched.

The Cheetah Hunt was my favorite ride as it shoots immediately out of the gate at an incredible speed. The coaster makes its way to the top only to plunge down through a rocky gorge. It is the longest roller coaster at the park.

One of my favorite attractions at Busch Gardens was the Animal Care Center where I could watch the medical team work on an eagle’s wing.

Busch Gardens opened its animal care facility in 2012 at an estimated cost of $5 million. From nutrition to treatments, X-rays to surgeries, visitors are able to watch the animal care team take on some animal science’s major challenges in their state of the art facility while guests watch the team care for over 200 species of animals.

The day was amazing with so many rides, animals and incredible experiences, but it wouldn’t have been complete without a photo with Big Bird!

A Day with Melissa in Miami Beach

Melissa and I met while working at the Tampa International Airport. I would eventually move to Ohio and she to Miami, but we always managed to stay in touch. I loved staying with her in Miami and our visits always revolved around incredible restaurants, last minute outings and late night stops at the grocery.

My flight arrived early Friday, so I would have a long weekend before leaving for Ohio on Monday morning. When I arrived at the airport, Melissa met me at the gate and since she had another hour to work, I waited in the United Airlines Club. Raquel would also be joining us after stopping at home to change before going out.

Mel was excited to show me around the art space of Wynwood with its 20 foot murals and collages. We shopped at several of the retail stores and strolled through the art galleries before lunch.

A small group had begun to form outside of Wynwood Bar & Kitchen but within minutes we were seated and looking over the menu. Known for its small plates, USA Today ranked the restaurant as one of the 10 Best in Miami. Executive Chef Joseph Forest has created an innovative menu, while the walls are adorned with artwork from Shepherd Fairey and Christian Awe.

Along with our specialty drinks, Mel ordered the ceviche, Raquel, the Spanish charcuterie and I decided on the pork belly with a side of bok choy. We knew we would be going out later that night but this would tie us over until then.

We arrived at Mel’s condo on Miami Beach, I grabbed my suitcase out of the back seat of the Porsche and we dropped off the car with the valet. As soon as we walked in the door of the condo, I dropped off my bags in the guest room and went straight for the balcony. The view is incredible from up here and there was a nice breeze coming in through the sliding glass door. Melissa brought out a couple of cocktails and we waited for Raquel, Sam and a few other friends of Mel’s before we went out.

Once everyone arrived we decided on dinner at Mila’s on Lincoln Road for a party of eight. It was the perfect night with a light breeze and beautiful, clear sky. We ordered several dishes to share and a few drinks before going back to the condo. We made a quick stop at the W Hotel to catch up with the locals and after about an hour, we decided to go back upstairs.

I honestly can’t get enough of this incredible view….

Hundley Cellars, A Cozy Winery in Ohio’s Grand River Valley

An adorable cottage sits in the midst of northeast Ohio’s wine country. With brown shingle siding, a stone fireplace, vaulted ceiling and hunter green roofing, it looks more like a hunting lodge than a Great River Valley winery . From the moment I arrived, I felt as though I was sitting in the midst of a best friend’s great room. The gorgeous light wood interior, accented with dark furniture was classic and extremely cozy.

I selected a table looking out towards the deck where it was still quite cold to be seated outside. I placed my order at the tasting bar for a flight of wines and a small plate from the simple snacks menu which included cheese, crackers and meat for an additional charge.

My wines arrived and shortly thereafter the Cheese Board which had some amazing samples of Cotswold (Gloucester with Chives, England) cheese, Red Dragon (with Whole Grain Mustard, Wales) cheese, Five Counties/Stripey Jack (England) Vintage Cheddar (Canada), pickles and artisan crackers. The meat selection was the perfect size that paired well with the wines I had selected.

Starting out with the Chardonnay, I noted the beautiful blonde color of the wine and simple body. Lightly oaked, this perfect buttery Chardonnay would pair quite nicely with a lovely Camembert. I knew that my sister will enjoy this wine over the holidays and added this to my list of wines I wanted to purchase.

The Estate Traminette was the color of sunshine and I could taste the minerals in this wine for certain. It was a perfect pairing with the crackers that were placed on my board as the third set from the left.

Interestingly, the Niagara had what appeared to be bubbles and I enjoyed this wine with the selection of meat. It was a semi-sweet wine that had a mild bite to its finish.

The Estate Seyval are grown on the property and are hand picked during harvest. With a color of light straw, this wine had a medium body and a short finish and I imagined it would be perfect with grilled salmon or a tuna steak.

The Late Harvest Vidal was another estate wine which had a hint of light green to its light yellow undertones. It had an intense honey taste with a strong apricot smell. The taste was fruity with a smooth texture and I knew this would pair well with my spicy Asian dishes.

The Merlot had a nice dryness and full body. A beautiful beet color, this purplish red wine was perfect with the meat and cheese and ended with a short tart finish.

My final sample was the Harvest Red. Solid red in color it had it had a very strong grape smell which reminded me of jam. A very sweet grape juice taste which I find to be typical of Ohio wines and always a delicious choice.

Hundley Cellars opened its doors in 2014 and offers an amazing selection of wines. Sitting on 35 acres in Ashtabula County, the property includes a beautiful outdoor deck to enjoy the pond and surrounding vineyards.

Ship’s Shore Excursions or Go on my Own?

When selecting a cruise, I search for itineraries with ports of call I have not yet visited. After making my decision, I research each individual stop on the route for a list of attractions to explore. I reference travel books and magazines, online resources and compare the information to the outings the ship has to offer. Depending on the activity, the amount of time and cost for the ship’s excursion, I make my decision to purchase the ship’s tour or reach out to a third party vendor.

So how do I ultimately decide what I will do in each port? Here are some of the pros and cons of purchasing the shore excursion from the ship or going out on my own.

Purchasing the Ship’s Shore Excursions:

The cruise lines have negotiated the attractions and pricing with local, reputable companies in each port, so in most cases, I can count on lower prices and quality day trips.
The cruise ship tours will ensure that I am back in plenty of time for the ship’s departure.
I have the option to pre-pay for the excursions or pay at the end of the cruise.
I will meet fellow passengers on the ship making new friends.
In the event of an emergency, the ship will be notified and further action can be taken (i.e., assist in disembarkation, notifying the next of kin).
Shore excursions from the ship disembark prior to general disembarkation.

Going out on my own:

The ship’s shore excursion may include a stop on their tour that does not interest me, so I can visit the attraction(s) that I prefer and may be able to add another place of interest.
I can negotiate my own price, which could possibly be less expensive than the ship’s shore excursion.
I have the freedom to take my time at the location I am visiting rather than cutting my visit short, as long as I can make it back to the ship on time.
I can choose when to leave and return to the ship (i.e., to eat aboard rather than ashore)

Of course there are other considerations such as how far the ship is docked/anchored from the main attractions, whether I have seen most of the points of interest on previous cruises and what my options are within walking distance of the ship.

I hope these points will provide you with an idea of how to go about making your own decision when deciding on whether to purchase the ship’s shore excursion or going out on your own. And should you decided to book a third-party tour or explore the port independently, be aware of when you must be back aboard the ship, not the time that the ship is departing! Bon Voyage!

From Laid-Back to Energetic, Exploring the Cities of Lovina and Kuta in Bali

It was my last morning in Lovina and I was traveling south to explore the popular tourist city of Kuta. I said goodbye to the beach, joined the Sunarsas as we caravanned our way for a two and a half hour journey.

Passing through the town of Batur, we could see the Ulun Danu Temple with its numerous statues. Dedicated to the goddess of rivers and lakes, Dewi Danu, it is the second most important temple in Bali. Pura Gunung Menak is set in the beautiful region of Kintamani at the base of Mount Batur and is one of Bali’s nine directional temples. The devastating eruption of Mount Batur left the local villagers to rebuild their town yet miraculously its most important shrine survived.

The nine temples on the complex are categorized by each god and its purpose. For example, Pura Taman Sari represents all matters relating to agriculture while Pura Sampian Wangi is dedicated to the making of various crafts. The Balinese Hindus leave offerings at the designated temples and pray for blessings depending on their specific needs. Throughout the temples, there are statues of monkeys, representing Hanuman, a heroic god of Hindu legend. His likeness represents bravery, strength and perseverance, a symbol of loyalty and selflessness.

The spectacular scenic view from the temple overlooks Lake Batur and the mountain. The weather was a bit overcast, but the vantage point from here on a sunny day is nothing less than spectacular.

I was a little disappointed that I could not see the top of Mount Batur because of the clouds. A trek to the top to view the sunrise is a popular excursion for many tourists. We gathered back into the car for the remainder of our drive, deciding to make a stop in the artistic town of Ubud to take in the view of its famous rice terraces in the heart of the city.

The drive seemed to fly by as we entered the town of Ubud. We found a parking spot close to the rice fields and hurriedly walked towards the restaurant where Wayan had made plans to meet some friends for lunch. This little artist community is abundant with Balinese restaurants and we planned to browse the assorted clothing and art shops after our meal.

Having finished my order of delicious bakso soup and a side of rice, the Sunarsas and I walked around the corner to the Tegallalang Rice Terrace. This location was made popular by the film Eat, Pray, Love. I am fascinated by the vivid green layers of rice plants that create a set of stairs on the side of the hill. The local owner of the terraces offered us coconut milk from his trees and encouraged us to buy some of the artwork and souvenirs from the nearby shops.

The view from the street was surreal as we descended a set of stairs taking us closer into the fields. Wayan’s children decided to take the walkway down so that I could take their photos. Having a few minutes for visiting the shops, it was finally time for our departure.

The character and charm of Ubud can be seen in its amazing architecture. Walking back to the car, we strolled through the stone pagodas and sacred buildings. The subdued colors seem to blend in with the earthy surroundings as tourists made their way into boutiques and coffee shops for a moment to relax. I love the laid back atmosphere of Ubud, but I am looking forward to checking out the upbeat crowds of the south before flying back to the United States.

A Jungle Atmosphere on the Streets

The Bali Zoo, A Journey Through Photos

Trying to decide what I wanted to do while in Kuta, I learned that I could interact with some of the animals at the Bali Zoo. Hiring an amazing driver for the day, he suggested that we start here and then I could decide if I wanted to attend the Safari Park as well.

The Bali Zoo attracts visitors from all over the world. I was looking forward to seeing some of the unique animals that I may not have a chance to see back home. Here is a photographic account of some of the animals I enjoyed meeting at The Bali Zoo.

Entering the zoo, I was welcomed by white parrots and an opportunity to have my photo taken with them. I quickly made my way towards the lions when I noticed the zookeepers were preparing to feed them.

With raw chickens tethering from a hoisted line, these lions were going to have to work for their lunch.

Once the lions had eaten, the lioness took a relaxing break from the action by resting on the rock.

This tiger had a large area to roam and was pacing back and forth in preparation of eating his afternoon meal.

The Australian wallabies were preparing for their nap while basking in the afternoon sun.

Can you believe the tongue on that sun bear? They use it to extract honey from bee nests.

The orangutan gave us quite a show. He paced back and forth, posing for the cameras.

After taking a ride on this beautiful beast, I fed Budi sugarcane sticks in preparation for his next customer.

While grabbing a bite to eat at the Elephant View Restaurant, I was entertained by the bathing elephants.

I had the opportunity to wrap a bearcat around my neck.

I was a little less excited to hold the crocodile as I watched him become a bit fidgety with the person holding him before me. Was happy to give him back before I lost any body parts!

Look at the paws on this tiger cub! We could have our photo taken with him but was instructed not to touch him. So beautiful!

The Bali Zoo is in the south of Bali in Gianyar about an hour’s drive from Kuta. They are open from 9AM to 6PM and offer several different packages, elephant rides, animal handling and feeding. There is a night time admission as one of the packages that Bali Zoo offers. Admission price is $28 US for adults and $18 US for children. Bali, Indonesia: Hotel Nirwana and Lovina Beach’s Charm

Although I enjoyed my stay at the Aditya Beach Resort, I wanted to be closer to the town’s center, to interact with the locals and try a restaurant or two. I found a room at the Nirwana Water Garden Hotel, located on the main strip, which was the perfect location for exploring this charming little village.

As soon as I walked onto the resort, I could see a restaurant on the right, the registration desk in front of me and the pool and bungalows to my left. The property is beautifully decorated and I was thrilled to spend a couple of nights here.

I checked into my room where I was greeted by the neighborhood rabbit that lives on the grounds. I stored my belongings and was ready to find a restaurant for dinner and a couple of beers. I passed the pool and was tempted to take a swim, but I was more excited to explore Lovina and walk the beach.

Slowly wandering the streets to take it all in, I admired the colorful artistry of the statues, wood carvings and offering pedestals. It is not uncommon to see monkey-like figures as well as images of elephants which represent the gods of the Hindu. Most of the artwork is connected to Bali’s strong religious beliefs, which has a large influence on its culture.

The craftsmanship of the Balinese woodwork is exquisite and detailed. The three-dimensional carpentry usually tells a story of human enlightenment or the conflict between good and evil. The displayed artwork invoked a sense of spirituality, regardless of one’s beliefs.

As dusk began to fall over the town, the music grew louder from the local bars. I met up with a couple of vendors, purchased a few necklaces and started looking for a place to enjoy dinner. I stopped halfway from my hotel when I noticed the Kakatua Bar & Restaurant, an open air eatery with patio seating.

I took a seat closest to the street and ordered a nice, cold Bintang beer. After looking through the menu, I selected the red snapper as my main course and watched tourists fill the empty seats surrounding me. At first glance, I thought that the name of the restaurant was named after the Indonesian city of Krakatoa, but my server explained that the Kakatua are the resident cockatoos.

It took awhile for my food to arrive, but it gave me some time to people watch, catch up on my journal and eavesdrop on the table beside me. The red snapper was worth the wait and I enjoyed listening to an Australian guitarist sing James Taylor tunes. It was finally sinking in that I was actually in Bali. The past few days have been so busy that I hadn’t appreciated the fact that I had finally arrived in paradise.

I savored every last bite of my meal and after a second beer, I began making the walk back to the hotel. I looked forward to a peaceful night’s sleep, drifting off with a smile on my face, thankful for the opportunity to explore such an amazing place.

Dolphin Watching at Lovina Beach

Tickets vary from $15 to $18 and the boats seat up to five or six. If you are staying in Lovina Beach, there is a kiosk on the main street, heading towards the beach on the right hand side. If you are staying in South Bali (Kuta, Jimbaran, etc.), contact the concierge for tickets.

Nirwana Water Garden is located in the heart of Lovina Beach. It is a 45-minute drive to the dive site of Menjangan Island. Ngurah Rai International Airport is a 2.5-hour drive away. The hotel can provide hotel transfers for a fee.

Nirwana Restaurant serves Indonesian specialties, with the option of in-room dining. Guests can enjoy a guided tour to visit the dolphins at Lovina Beach, which can be arranged by the Nirwana’s staff.

The Kuta Puri Bungalows is a jewel of a resort in Kuta, Bali that is quietly tucked away in the fast-paced streets of the city. I had been booked in the nearby Hard Rock Hotel, but they had overbooked and my friend, Wayan found this amazing place.

The front desk is an open air structure where the attendants are super friendly and helpful in arranging tours and drivers for the day.

The paved pathways are perfect for exploring the grounds and taking a leisurely stroll.

Towards the front of the resort are the smaller rooms that are perfect for an economical stay.

I opted for the bungalow which included a sunken in living room, raised bedroom and an upscale outdoor bathroom set up in a garden style environment.

The outdoor bench was the perfect location for watching the thunderstorms. The bungalow was set towards the back of the resort where it was very private and quiet.

A small back porch of flowers and fauna was located off of the living quarters of the bungalow.

Two swimming pools are one of the few wonderful amenities provided by the hotel.

An attendant provides guests with pool towels each day.

Kuta Puri offers daily massages in a simple secluded area of the hotel’s property.

A Hindu temple is located towards the back of the hotel.

The resident cat stands guard at the Hindu temple.

A complimentary breakfast is served each morning at the resort’s restaurant. Lunch and dinner can be purchased here throughout the day.

The grounds are impeccable which makes for a nice morning, afternoon or evening walk.
