Travel Tips for Las Vegas

How can you maximize your time and money while visiting Las Vegas? With so many deals and discounts, I have provided a few suggestions.

If you decide to gamble (either a little, but definitely if a lot), pick up a “rewards” card from the service desk inside of the casino so that you can rack up credits, comps and receive future mailings with deals from the casinos. Some of the deals include free hotel stays, complimentary buffets and discounted entertainment. If you are gambling with a friend, spouse or significant other, put two cards under one name so the points will accumulate faster. So how does it work? When you find a slot machine, put the card in before inserting your money and points will be added to the card as you continue playing. Remember to remove the card when you have finished playing the machine. If you happen to forget to remove the card, the service desk within the hotel will gladly provide you with a replacement. One rewards card may be connected to a network of hotels (i.e., Mlife and Total Rewards) which is also beneficial for adding more points to your card, so keep this in mind when choosing a casino.
During your stay in Vegas you will be approached by numerous show/attraction representatives to book tickets through them. Check with your hotel’s comp desk/rewards desk where you may be able to secure a better rate for show tickets, etc.
If it is your first time to Las Vegas, you should really try to take in the free attractions that are offered by each of the hotels. There are floral displays, water fountain shows, museums and talking statues associated with the theme of a particular resort. For example, the Bellagio provides a spectacular water show while the Mirage’s volcano erupts at scheduled times throughout the evening.
Most people will tell you that your odds for winning at the slot machines are on Fremont Street. While this may ring true, we won nearly $500 playing Bier House at the Bellagio.
If you are not pressed for time, take the bus to Fremont Street instead of taking a taxi. You will save money and have unlimited use of the bus for a period of 24 hours for a small fee of $8 per person.
Traffic can be excessive, especially along the Las Vegas Strip, so unless it is absolutely necessary, don’t rent a car. There are plenty of alternative transportation options available.
We were surprised to learn that Harrah’s offered transportation to the airport. This service was extremely convenient and cost us the same amount as the Super Shuttle, $10.
Venetian for Breakfast. We heard that the $9.99 buffet was the best deal in town. So, when our flight arrived early in the morning, this was our first stop. Another great breakfast joint was Carlos n’ Charlie’s where we ordered the Charlie’s Breakfast Burrito with scrambled eggs, a special blend of chicken, carne asada and chorizo, Cheddar and Jack cheese and pico de gallo folded in a flour tortilla topped with red sauce and sour cream for only $12.99. We couldn’t resist the opportunity to eat outside.
When you visit Las Vegas, try to avoid the weekends. Hotel rates are much higher and the streets, casinos and events are crowded! We learned that many people visit from California because of its close proximity to Vegas.
Drinks are free when you are gambling. So this may not be new to you, but what you may not have known is that you can order top shelf liquor at no additional cost. Our friends ordered lemon-drop martinis made with limoncello and they were absolutely delicious.

My Return Flight on Frontier Airlines: LAS to CVG

PRE-FLIGHT EXPERIENCE:

Since this was my return flight back to Cincinnati from Las Vegas, all of the arrangements had been made ahead of time. You can check out my first experience flying Frontier Airlines at https://www.thesuitelifeoftravel.com/my-first-experience-with-frontier-airlines/

I headed down to the service desk/front desk of Harrah’s to book my transportation from the hotel to the airport. They provide shuttle service for a fee of $10 per person. Unfortunately, I was not able to print out my ticket that night, but I knew I could wait until I arrived at the airport to print out the boarding pass and pay the additional fee for baggage.

DAY OF THE FLIGHT:

I arrived 90 minutes prior to the flight’s departure and again, was met by Frontier Airlines with a long wait for the ticket counter. I approached the ticket agent because I was leaving from the hotel and unable to print out the ticket for my return flight. Therefore, I did not have my seat selected nor did I pay in advance for my luggage.

The ticket agent quickly processed my paperwork, tagged my luggage and provided me with paper tickets so that I could begin the wait in line for security. Interestingly, I was not charged an additional fee here for my luggage. Thanks Frontier Agent and the Las Vegas Ticket Agents!

The security line seemed quite long but there were several machines available to check carry-ons and screen passengers. I was entertained by passengers traveling in bath robes while an agitated security agent, repeated the security procedures over and over again. It seemed as though people may have been too hung over to follow instructions. The wait lasted about 20 minutes with only a few to spare before I needed to reach my gate.

I was given the first row, middle seats, with plenty of leg room. I slept most of the 3 ½ hour flight back home and it seemed as if in no time I was landing in CVG. I collected my luggage from the carousel, picked up my car from long-term parking and headed back home. Yeah!

So would I book another flight with Frontier Airlines? Absolutely! Now that I am familiar with their policies and procedures and know what to expect at the ticket counter, this will be a breeze the next time I choose Frontier as my air carrier. Many thanks to all of the employees at Frontier who made my trip uneventful (which is always a good thing) and provided me excellent service!

My First Experience with Frontier Airlines

PRE-FLIGHT EXPERIENCE

I was invited to join a friend for a week in Las Vegas and needed to book flights. I was so happy to learn that Frontier Airlines flies out of Cincinnati and provides non-stop service. I carefully watched the price of the flight over the next couple of weeks and we were finally able to secure a deal of $250 per person.

A couple of days before departure, we selected our seats and confirmed Frontier’s luggage policy. I did not realize that there was a charge to secure seat assignments ahead of time, but for an additional $4, we could book our seats together. To reserve the emergency row, we paid an additional $45.

Next, I checked out the baggage policy. This was extremely confusing. There were various tier fees for both carry on and checked luggage depending on whether you paid in advance or at the gate. Either way, the items that I would be bringing with me would not qualify for the free “under the seat in front of me” carry-on. I would have to pay the additional fee, but decided to pay at the ticket counter.

When we reviewed all of the charges and base fee of the flight, it was well worth the booking our flight through Frontier. Besides, our fare was only $350, compared to the cheapest fare of $650 and the opportunity to fly direct weighed in Frontier’s favor. Not to mention we would arrive at 8:30 in the morning, giving us a full day to explore Las Vegas.

DAY BEFORE THE FLIGHT

I printed out our tickets the day before the flight using the airline’s website, www.flyfrontier.com. The process was simple as I select the tab, MY TRIP/CHECK-IN. The “Find Your Reservation” appeared on the screen, so I continued by entering our last names and the reservation code that was provided through Expedia. Once I entered the information, I completed the process and we were ready to fly Frontier the next day.

DAY OF THE FLIGHT

We had an early morning flight so we arrived at the ticket counter at 6:15AM. We were not able to check our luggage in from outside, but the ticket counter was easy to find and we already had our boarding passes. There was some confusion because there was no one available to direct us to where we needed to go. We quickly learned that although we had checked in our bags online the day before, we would be required to stand in line for the ticket agent to take our luggage. The queue was not too long and we had plenty of time before the flight.

We reached the counter, and paid our $30 per bag and we were headed for security. Soon we were at the gate and ready for take off.

ABOARD THE FLIGHT

Our tickets told us that we were in Zone 3 we had time to take a seat and relax prior to boarding. I have to say that our seats were actually quite comfortable.

After take off, the crew came through the cabin to offer us refreshments of snacks and drinks. We decide to take a look at the menu and I was totally surprised by the prices, but it sure beats having to spend more money for the flight.

We had a perfect flight which arrived in Vegas ahead of schedule. Go Frontier!

LUGGAGE PICK UP

We departed the plane and realized that we may have missed the carousel for our luggage. They announced on the flight that we would be picking up our belongings on carousel 28. Somehow we boarded the shuttle over to Terminal 1 and learned that we needed to go back to Terminal 3 but could not go back the way we came in. The porter provided us with directions to back track to the correct terminal and our luggage was waiting. Just a little delay, but we were so happy to be in Vegas.

The Aria Hotel in Las Vegas

The Aria Resort and Casino was featured on a recent episode of The Bachelor…okay, so I admit that the show is one of my guilty pleasures….

As we approached the casino entrance into the ARIA, it was undoubtedly one of the most beautiful, modernistic hotels I had seen in Las Vegas. As a matter of fact, the ARIA is considered the most sophisticated of accommodations in all of Vegas. Built in association with the City Center, this elegant casino and resort boasts some of the best restaurants inspired by some of the most influential chefs in the world!

What makes the resort so unique is its use of technology. Each hotel room or “smart room”, is equipped with curtains, lights and thermostats that adjust to regulate the use of energy depending on whether the guest is inside or outside of the room.

There are 4,004 hotel rooms at the ARIA making it the 9^th largest hotel in the world. The casino at the ARIA is the only one located at CityCenter.

There are 16 restaurants and 10 bars and clubs in the hotel. I have to admit my favorite place in the hotel is the Jean Philippe Patisserie with its decadent desserts and confections. I could spend the day here, but unfortunately, I would probably feel sorry for it later. The designs and artistry of each creation are decadent as well as mesmerizing. And if you find that you will not be able to visit the Patisserie anytime soon, you can always visit their website at jpchocolates.com. But I will warn you, you will be tempted to order, so have your credit card ready!

The resort opened in 2009 as the largest and tallest of all of CityCenter’s structures. With its eccentric décor, one could mistakenly feel as though he was in the Land of Oz. It is comprised of two glass towers that are each 61 stories tall.

There is a theater that accommodates 1,800 spectators for the Cirque du Soleil show, Zarkana replacing Viva Elvis which paid tribute to The King of Rock and Roll. What remains as an homage to Elvis is the Gold Lounge, taking on the décor and design of Elvis’ famous Memphis home, Graceland.

Since its opening, ARIA has also been featured in modern day film and television. From Last Vegas to The Amazing Race, you may recognize the unique structure of one of Las Vegas’ most recent resorts. Of course, that is, if you are not an avid “Bachelor” fan. But not to worry, I am certain that there will be more exposure for ARIA in the years to come. It is a resort experience that must not be kept secret!

Las Vegas: New York-New York

Las Vegas’ New York-New York Hotel is a perfect example of east meets west. With a fascinating façade of the New York Skyline, Vegas’ strip resort is full of all things that represent one of the greatest cities in the world.

The architecture includes a replica of the Empire State Building as well as the Chrysler Building. Quite noticeable is the 150 foot tall reproduction of the Statue of Liberty as well as various monuments and museums from The Big Apple. Grand Central Terminal and the Main Immigration Building located on Ellis Island are also represented in the façade.

Throughout the hotel are many landmarks that originally reside in NYC. For example, the Brooklyn Bridge is set outside of the hotel and inside, there are various sections of the resort that are named after the city’s neighborhoods and attractions. Take some time to browse the shops in Greenwich Village.

One of the main attractions of Vegas’ New York-New York hotel is its roller coaster. It passes inside and outside of the resort with coaster cars that take after the original Checker Cabs of New York City. The coaster reaches speeds of up to 67 miles per hour with its maximum drop totaling 144 feet.

New York-New York is home to the Cirque du Soleil production of Zumanity. It is important to note that the show is restricted to admission of those persons 18 and over. The resort also hosts headline acts such as Garth Brooks and provides scheduled entertainment at the Brooklyn Bridge.

The Fremont Street Experience in Las Vegas

Images reflecting off of the canopy, screaming teens riding the zip-line, and stages of entertainment on the outstreets of Fremont Street summed up my Fremont Street Experience in the Old Town of Las Vegas.

It was a short distance for our hotel where we picked up the shuttle for Old Las Vegas. Dave and I grabbed a seat on the local city bus and within fifteen minutes we had arrived. Fremont Street spans four blocks with casinos, buffet specials and bars on each side. Three stages provide live music and we were excited to take in the tunes of the Beatles with look-a-like musicians dressed up as John, Paul, Ringo and George. The electric atmosphere and intimate space differs than the wide open spaces of Las Vegas Boulevard and the prices were less expensive as well.

We enjoyed our time strolling the old strip where historical casinos have existed since the early 1900s. The Golden Gate & Casino Hotel, once known as the “Hotel Nevada” was the first casino in Las Vegas, built in 1906. More casinos would soon follow in the early 1930’s and Vegas’ gambling industry would grow over the next few years. People continue to visit the Golden Gate with a bit of nostalgia, but most will stop by for their cheap shrimp cocktails and best odds of winning.

The Fremont Hotel & Casino opened in 1956 and was the first high rise to be built in Las Vegas and was considered to be the tallest building in the whole state of Nevada. This hotel makes up one of the “four corners” located at the crossroads of Casino Center Boulevard and Fremont Street. It is here where Wayne Newton made his Las Vegas debut in 1959.

Fascinated with the crime show, “Snapped” I had somewhat of a morbid interest in the Ted Binion case. Strolling the slots of Binion’s Gambling Hall and Casino I thought of the episode in which Ted Bunion was allegedly killed by his girlfriend and her lover. The indictment would eventually be overturned in 1998.

The hotel first opened in 1951 under the name of the Horseshoe Club and was owned by the Binion family until 2004. Poker players will recognize this building as the venue of the annual World Series of Poker which began in 1970. The hotel portion of Binion’s was closed in 2009.

The Golden Nugget was completed in 1946 and is said to be the largest of the downtown casinos. With close to 2,500 rooms and suites, it is known as the first building built as a casino from the ground up. The resort’s famed attraction is the 960 ounce gold nugget called the “Hand of Faith” and is on display inside.

Whether it is the Fremont Street Experience or the endless wandering among the Fremont Street casinos, visitors leave the strip to explore Old Vegas made famous by the Rat Pack. A trip to “Glitter Gulch” is an experience of unusual dimensions. Given this nane due to the number of neon signs, many of the originals have since retired and can be found refurbished in the Neon Museum exhibit.

The most famous of the neon signs on Fremont Street is Vegas Vic. With his cowboy boots and cigarette, it is one of the most prominent of all figures representing Las Vegas. The number of lights can be overwhelming yet its animation is entertaining.

Classic movies such as Elvis Presley’s “Viva Las Vegas”, the James Bond film “Diamonds are Forever” and the 1997 comedy “Vegas Vacation” will forever memorialize the original Las Vegas. What an amazing Strip of history.

The Flamingo Las Vegas

If casinos could talk, the Flamingo Las Vegas would have a few great stories to tell. One of the oldest resorts first built on the strip, I can’t imagine all of the celebrities that have passed under its pink peacock lights in the last century.

Billy Wilkerson, a real estate developer and nightclub owner, wanted to open a luxury hotel that would rival the European resorts that offered extravagant amenities. When the development came under financial difficulty, it was notorious mobster, Bugsy Siegel who would financially contribute to the project which first opened in 1946. In total, the Flamingo would cost a total of $6 million.

Unfortunately, Wilkerson signed a deal with the devil and when Siegel’s investment was slow at producing a profit, it would end up costing Siegel his life. He was gunned down in the summer of 1947.

The hotel changed hands and names over the next few years and the famous flamingos were a main attraction. There is also a wildlife habitat with a koi pond, adding to the hotel’s tropical theme. Jimmy Buffett opened his trademark Margaritaville restaurant at the Flamingo and and expanded the franchise to include the Margaritaville mini-casino.

Various acts have come and gone at the Flamingo, but as of this writing, Donny and Marie Osmond and Olivia Newton John were the headliners.

The Flamingo Las Vegas fades in comparison to the newly designed luxury hotels, but its attraction is its history in the life of Las Vegas. It is also famous as the location of some great films such as Ocean’s 11 starring such Rat Pack members as Frank Sinatra, Peter Lawford, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Junior. Bugsy, a film about the life of Bugsy Siegel was also shot on location at The Flamingo.

The Bellagio, Las Vegas

I clearly remember the first time I stood in amazement of The Bellagio was when a friend of mine brought us here for dinner. He had just married a couple of months ago at this stunning, luxury resort and shared photos of their extravagant wedding celebration. Of course, he spared no expense, so the photos of their wedding were beyond anything I could have ever imagined.

I eventually had the opportunity to make my own memories at the Bellagio during a New Years’ celebration with another dear friend this year and found myself basking in the beauty of its opulence and luxury. Located along the strip, the Bellagio is one of the most luxurious resorts of Las Vegas.

We tried to find a seat at Lago by Julian Serrano which provides excellent views of the famous Fountains of the Bellagio. Unfortunately, we had arrived too late, and settled for a gorgeous view along the 8-acre lake, reminiscent of Italian lakeside village.

As crowds congregated along the sidewalk, the thousand theatrical fountains began their show to the tune of a classical Italian opera, both elegant and spectacular.

Entering the lobby of the resort, we admired the glass flowers of world renowned artist, Dale Chihuly. The sculpture, hanging from the ceiling, is made of over 2000 handblown blossoms. Named the Fiori Di Como, the effervescent colors seem to come to life as the sunlight radiates through the glass and windows from the rooftop.

The Bellagio’s Gallery of Fine Art and the lavish Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Garden are additional glamorous features of the hotel on display for guests and visitors.

I had my heart set on a confection from Jean Philippe Patisserie but when we arrived, we were so overwhelmed by the many choices that we decided on a café mocha for an afternoon boost. We promised ourselves that we would save room after dinner which would leave us plenty of time to decide on which sweet decadence would satisfy our craving. Did I happen to notice some wedding cakes in the corner?

Because Peter had not seen Cirque du Soleil’s “O” performance, he booked tickets for us for the evening show. The first time I had visited Vegas, my former boss had purchased tickets and I was mesmerized by the performance and more astonished by the price. The show continues to be one of the most sought after shows in Vegas, but we were so excited to share this experience together.

Soon the show would begin and since we were dressed and ready to go, we enjoyed a happy hour drink at Hyde Bellagio. The swanky, upscale lounge is also a perfect location to watch the Bellagio fountains, and reminds me of a set used for a Victoria’s Secret photo shoot. Surrounded by gigantic mirrors, chandeliers with suspended flowers and Mediterranean furniture, we took a seat close to the balcony.

The evening could not have been more perfect ending with a return visit to Jean Philippe for gelatos and walking the upscale promenade of shops. The show was phenomenal, dinner was indulgent, drinks were relaxing and the company was incredibly charming. It was a fairytale day at the Italian lake of Vegas.

Harrah’s, the Perfect Location on the Las Vegas Strip

Vegas is a melting pot of visitors and residents that makes it a city where practically anything can happen. You can see a wide range of fashion from upscale, designer gowns to tube tops and flip flops. It is a town that attracts wannabe rock stars, but none so flamboyant as the costumed KISS impersonators that I had to pass each day to reach our hotel room at Harrah’s. I give them a lot of credit with their perfect makeup, 80’s wigs, silver moonboots, but sporting a thong? Now I’ve seen it all.

After grabbing a cup of coffee at Starbucks, I waited for a group of my friends at our designated meeting place, the statue of the cartoonish casino winners. Harrah’s would be my home for the next five nights and it turned out to be the perfect locale along the Las Vegas Strip. I was provided a room on the 19^th floor that overlooked the pool with the mountains in the distance. The hotel and casino are centrally located so most attractions are within walking distance. The bus station stops here as well which made it easy to catch transportation down to Fremont Street.

Harrah’s also provides quite a few eateries that will fit anyone’s budget. On the first level was Starbucks which we frequented each morning, a Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse (upscale), Oyster Bar (casual), and Fulton Street Food Hall (casual) – which had pizza by the slice. Upstairs we stopped by Toby Keith’s I Love this Bar and Grill for a couple of strong drinks where they serve southern cooking and hot country music. IcePan for dessert includes custom made ice cream. Harrah’s buffet, Flavors is also located on the first level.

Harrah’s has locations throughout the US and provides their patrons a generous rewards system. Once becoming a member of their Total Rewards program, there are perks for playing, dining, shopping or staying at select casinos and resorts.

Later that week I was invited to enjoy a day at the pool where I was provided VIP drink service and use of a cabana. I felt like I was a superstar with so much attention. It was a beautiful sunny day and I was so appreciative to have been included in the anniversary festivities.

Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas

The colossal palace complex of Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas represents the opulence and luxury that only the Romans could have envisioned. Adorned with Romanesque statues and artwork, this fine resort could have easily been a summer home for the rulers of Rome, one of the world’s greatest empires. The mega-resort first opened in the 1960s with its over-the-top reconstruction of the European city’s most memorable monuments, statues and fountains.

Caesar’s Palace would not adequately represent Rome without its Colosseum offering entertainment from such acts as singers Celine Dion and Elton John as well as comedian headliner Jerry Seinfeld. The high-tech version of Rome’s ancient arena seats 41,000 with state of the art lighting systems and sound. While some may not be able to afford the venue’s entertainment, there are a group of animatronic statues that provide free hourly shows called the Fall of Atlantis & Festival Fountain Show.

The main dining attractions of Caesar’s Palace include three star Michelin chef, Guy Savoy’s restaurant, Gordon Ramsay’s Hell Kitchen (opened January 2018) and Pronto by Giada (opened early 2018). In addition to its dining and nightlife, it is no surprise that the Forum Shops are also a major attraction within the casino hotel.

Shopping at Caesar’s Palace

The most dramatic entrance into the Forum Shops is through The Strip. Gargantuan statues and a grand staircase welcome the shopping goddess to over 160 boutique shops to include expensive designers such as Fendi and Armani as well as specialty boutiques and a three story H&M.

Caesar’s Palace Fountains

After a day of shopping, a girl’s best friend is the Qua Baths and Spa. In addition to its spa services, a $25 day pass at the Roman Baths includes the opportunity to feel the heat in the cedar sauna or enjoy the cold of the arctic room.

Late into the night, the resort’s OMNIA nightclub, Pure, is known for its patio providing a view of the strip as well as its DJs spinning the latest chartbusters. Alternatively, for a laid-back atmosphere, drinks at the Spanish Steps are a must.
