South Beach, Brunch and Island Gardens

After a late night catching up with friends in Miami, we slept in before meeting up together for brunch.  While most spots on Miami Beach are quite expensive, Melissa knew of a more reasonably priced bistro where we could eat and drink for half the price.

Maxine’s is a ten minute walk from Roney’s so we stopped by a few boutique hotels along our way.  We were seated at a small table on Collins then ordered a few carafes of mimosas and placed our orders for brunch.

I ordered the blue cheese chicken salad with hard boiled egg, bacon and avocado.  Shawna decided on the club sandwich with fries and for Melissa, the chicken and spinach salad with hard boiled egg.  We knew that it would be later in the day before we would be eating again as we had plans to explore South Beach and then a night out.

We walked a couple of blocks south on Collins until we reached 15th street to reach Ocean Drive.  With views of the beach and the Atlantic Ocean, this is the more colorful side of Miami.  Further south, we would have some time to check out the weekend flea market.

The skies were overcast and a perfect temperature to continue further south into the Art Deco District until we reached the Villa Casa Casuarina (Versace Mansion).  Gianni Versace gained notoriety as a fashion designer in the 1980s and 90s, splitting his time between Miami and Milan.  Visitors are known for leaving flowers on the stairs of the 1930’s Spanish-style mansion, marking the location of his death.

We enjoyed the day exploring South Beach and after a couple of drinks at The Clevelander, we soon noticed the sun was beginning to set.  Our favorite place to watch the sunset is Nikki Beach, so we selected a table, ordered some mojitos and decided on the remaining plans for the night.

Back at the Roney Basecamp, we finally met up with the guys to decide what we would do next.  We hung around at the Penthouse taking photos and catching our second wind before boarding an Uber to Island Gardens, one of Miami’s hotspots and superyacht marina.

Our table was ready at The Deck and we placed our order for a couple of Seafood Towers starting with the Deluxe Tower which included their specialty Ceviche, a half dozen of Oysters, Shrimp Cocktail and Crab Legs.  We added additional plates of Ahi Tuna Tartare, Fried Calamari and the Charcuterie Board which included Mortadella, Copa, Duck Pastrami, Drunken Goat Cheese, Truffle Pecorino and Manchego.

The night was early so we went back to the condo to change into something more comfortable before walking over to the W Hotel bar.  We ordered a few overpriced drinks to meet up with some of Mel’s neighbors and then went back to the condo.

It is always so much fun catching up with Melissa and the crew that traveled to Istanbul and Greece together.  Our friendship has continued through so many years and i look forward to some more trips in the near future.

A Day in Morro Bay

Morro Bay was one of my last stops down the Pacific Coast Highway (Route 1) before heading over to Bakersfield to meet up with some friends.  This charming fishing town is most known for its large rock formation which rises 576 feet up from the harbor.  Morro Rock is one of nine volcanic plugs called the Nine Sisters that stretches along California’s Central Coast.  The Rock, as it is known by locals, is one of the best surfing spots, so I wanted to check it out for myself.  Surfing among dolphins, sea lions and harbor seals, I had the time of my life. I was so excited to see the large population of adorable otters that make their home in Morro and couldn’t wait to explore additional sightings of these playful little mammals while immersed in this charming town.

Built as a wharf to transport dairy and food products, the Embarcadero waterfront is now a boardwalk full of locally-owned shops and restaurants.  I decided to dine at the Great American Fish Company and catch another view of the otters frolicking in the sea.

With so many options on the menu, I decided to order the local back bay oysters. With a little hot sauce and horseradish, I slurped them down in seconds.  I was also intrigued by the GAFCO clam steamers and having dipped them in warm butter, they were the perfect taste of saltiness and fish.  Someday I will return for the ceviche, calamari (which comes highly recommended) or the local abalone (ab-ah-LOW-nee), a mild mollusk, which is also referred to as a mild tasting sea snail.

Before leaving Morro Bay, I purchased some salt water taffy at Carousel and made a trek around the base of The Rock to stretch out before leaving this beautiful place.  Rock climbing at Morro Rock requires a permit to ensure the protection of the peregrine falcons that nest here.  Once added to California’s Endangered Species list, there are two nesting pairs of falcons in the area.

I had an amazing adventure in Morro Bay.  Having my fill of seafood, a morning of surfing, an afternoon of otter watching and my lucky box of salt water taffy, it was time for me to set out for the Central Valley.

Exploring the Caribbean Side of Costa Rica

The view of the Arenal Volcano could be seen from miles away as we approached central Costa Rica.  The most beautiful blue background accented the green and grey contrast as thin clouds hovered over the peak.  Drawing thousands of visitors to central Costa Rica each year,  We had time to explore the volcano one last time before departing for the Gulf Coast where we would reach Puerto Limon.  It would be nearly a 7 hour drive to the coast with a stop in Poas.

We could not have had a more relaxing drive with just a few wispy clouds moving through to provide some relief from the hot, burning sun.  The trek was absolutely stunning with its scenic views, local gatherings and surprises behind each turn.  We shared the drive and I was happy when I could turn the car over, relieving my knuckles from holding so tightly to the steering wheel.  I quickly learned that the Costa Ricans drive somewhat aggressively, and the roads are a little unstable along the cliffs.

Reaching nearly 9,000 feet, the Poas Volcano is another one of the most visited attractions in Costa Rica.  This protected area in the Central Valley region is Costa Rica’s amazing geothermal feature with a milky blue sulfuric lake at its center.  Smoke and steam rise up through the cracks and crevices created in the hot rock.  Recorded as the largest active crater in the world, the hot water geyser shoots up over 820 feet high, but at that height is not dangerous to visitors.  We hiked up to the crater overlook trail which only takes about 10 minutes each way, measuring .3 miles for spectacular views.

I could have stayed here, mesmerized by its beauty, staring out over the volcano, but we had plans to reach the Caribbean side before nightfall.  We took in the amazing view and returned back to hiking the overlook trail leading to the parking lot.

Update:  Poas Volcano erupted on October 1, 2019 and the park is temporarily closed.

It took us nearly 8 hours to reach Puerto Viejo, but the ride was incredible with scenic views of farmland and tropical trees.  When we arrived on the coast, we were elated to find our hotel and unpack the car to explore the east coast for a couple days.

The next morning we sprinted down to the beach to find a great place to catch some waves and rays.  The weather was hot enough to take the cold edge off of the water, so we spent hours surfing the Salsa Brava.  We found hammocks to take some time to snack on the local food, especially the fruit and my favorite, ceviche.  With our suntans and sun-baked cheeks, we returned back to our room, showered and prepared for dinner and a night on the town.

Our hotel was close to the beach so we didn’t have far to drive.  I was ready before everyone else, so I took a seat outside of our room to enjoy the palm trees, beautiful bay  iguanas and a gentle breeze.  I enjoyed the few minutes to myself just taking in the scenery and wondering what lay ahead for dinner and drinks.  I was hoping we could stop by some of the shops as well to find a new bathing suit or cover up and another supply of Sex Wax for our boards.

We all agreed that we wanted to find a beachy restaurant where we could hear the waves and look out onto the water.  We could not get enough of the local ceviche and found an eatery that checked all of the boxes, Restaurante Tamara.  When it’s a place that the locals eat, it’s sure to be amazing.

A couple of drinks in and Edwin the owner introduced himself to us.  He was extremely hospitable and gave us a few tips for local attractions and sites.  The fresh seafood was absolutely fabulous, the ceviche did not disappoint and the drinks continued to flow.

After dinner, we walked over to the Salsa Brava Beach Bar for more drinks and dancing.  The reggae vibe of Puerto Viejo is infamous and the laid-back music made for a relaxing evening.   We were so tired from spending the day at the beach, so we left earlier than usual for another sunny day at the beach tomorrow.

What to Eat: 

  • Arroz con Leche is translated to rice with milk and is a popular dessert in Costa Rica. Additional ingredients include milk, cinnamon, salt and lemon zest, making this a delicious end to your meal.
  • Casado, which means marriage which is an interesting combination of meat such as beef, pork, chicken and fish as well as rice, beans, tortillas, fried platano maduro and salad. In addition, the dish also includes a fruit juice.
  • Ceviche is raw fish that has been “cooked” with citrus juices.
  • Gallo Pinto is a mixture of rice and beans with red bell peppers, onions, cilantro and other spices. The secret ingredient is the Salsa Lizano. It is a popular breakfast dish.
  • Sopra Negra is translated to black soup, which is the base of this delicious soup. Included with the black beans, there are onions, peppers, tomatoes, soft boiled eggs and spicy spices.
  • Tamales are similar to their Mexican cousin, but there are some differences, one of which is the wrapping. In Costa Rica, tamales are wrapped in banana leaves rather than corn husks.
