St. Ives Winery: Cable, Ohio

Updated:  St. Ives Winery has closed. 

Rolling hills and farmland led me to the small town of Cable, Ohio where I would stop by St. Ives Winery to sample their sweet wine and craft brews.  The lovely countryside brought me to  their tasting room, a small beige pole barn trimmed in maroon and decorated with patriot hostas and day lilies.

St. Ives is known for their meads made from local honey and their delicious ciders sourced  from nearby orchards in southern Ohio.  Creating a variety of options in small batches, the winery draws visitors from the surrounding counties.

The winery is owned by husband and wife team, Ryan and Heather Hostetler.  They started their business in 2014 out of a love for making beer.  Their journey began when Heather encouraged Ryan to purchase a home brew kit.  Within six weeks, he had  successfully created their first brew and the business grew to making wines as well.

I started my sampling adventure with their blush wine made from raspberries and dragonfruit.  A lovely shade of pink, this blush is light and semi-sweet.   Moving on to the next wine a red, made from pomegranate was incredibly crisp and refreshing.  My final sample was “Your Mom’s Peach” a white wine which tasted like fresh peaches.  I couldn’t resist and bought a bottle of each wine to have on hand for summer.  

Sitting at the counter, a book club group of women arrived and sat at a large table ordering several bottles of wine.  They had brought with them their own food and snacks and were so kind to offer me a cheese plate.  The winery allows for visitors to bring in their own food and snacks and can also order pizza from a local parlor which is delivered in minutes.

Mastropietro Winery in Berlin Center, Ohio

It was a beautiful sunny day exploring Ohio’s Amish Country when I happened upon an Italianate winery in Berlin Center, Mastropietro Winery.  The winery is surrounded by acres of vines producing estate grown varietals such as Vidal Blanc, Chambourcin and Frontenac grapes, perfect for the winter temperatures.  In addition to these hearty Ohio grapes, the winery also brings in northern California fruit for expanding their wine offerings.

Mastropietro Winery was the first to open in Mahoning County in 2005.  In addition to wine, they offer a lovely selection of sangrias, slushies and dessert wine.  With a full service bar, visitors who may not be interested in wine, can purchase craft beers, snacks and appetizers.

Grandfather Joseph began making wine in their basement which led to starting their business.  Soon, Joseph’s son Daniel, wife Marianne and sister Cathy were supporting the winery as well and were making award-winning wines.

The winery and tasting room hosts a number of events.  In addition, there is a spacious banquet hall for private events such as weddings.  In the summer, they sponsor concerts, a balloon festival and car shows.

Arriving in the afternoon, I noticed the stunning Tuscan-style property with plenty of outside seating.  I had decided on a glass of Dolce Bianco to start and found the perfect place to admire the surrounding fifty-two acres and enjoy the welcome silence.  Firepits are also available for guests, perfect for the cooler spring and fall weather.

Mastropietro was a welcome stop on my visit to Amish Country and I look forward to returning for one of their summer events and to restock on the Dolce Bianco.

The Winery at Wolf Creek in Norton, Ohio

Taking the last sip of my wine sample of Space Cowboy, I noticed a group of bubbly young college students walking through the door of The Winery at Wolf Creek, dressed for a bachelorette party. They approached the tasting bar where I was enjoying a glass of wine when we struck up a conversation.  It was their first time here, so they asked what I was drinking and if I had any suggestions for what they should order.

This was their first winery experience but they were not new to wine. We discussed which types of wine they would normally purchase and I shared with them my wine list with all of my hand written notes.   I suggested that they start out sampling some of the wines before they commit to a bottle.  They agreed that the sweet, fruit wines were more their style so they started out with samples of Blue (blueberry), Original Sin (apple) and Space Cowboy (peach).

The server set them up as I took a glass of Redemption out to the patio, waiting for a pizza from Fat Boys.  Redemption is a French-hybrid blend that is light on the sweet side which I absolutely enjoy chilled.

I took a menu outside to look over the beer selection that includes craft beers from local and popular breweries as well as ciders and fruit based ales.  The Winery at Wolf Creek has a limited menu of cheeses, meat and crackers but they welcome patrons to bring their own foods to enjoy with their wines while enjoying the spectacular view.

With a few minutes to spare, I reviewed my tasting notes and information that I had collected from my server.  Distracted by the beautiful view of the Akron skyline, I noted which wines I would be purchasing before leaving the winery.

The Vignoles was my first sample which is a semi-sweet estate wine that I found had a lingering sour finish.  This having been my first experience with this wine, I was curious to learn about specific food pairings that may alter the taste of the wine and found an unusual list to include pumpkin and ginger-based foods as well as gingers snaps*.

One of the varietals grown on the estate, Vignoles is one of three grapes that make up about 80 percent of their white wine production which also includes the Pinot Gris and Leon Millot.

Peppery and smooth, the Zinfandel was my absolute favorite but having learned that the winery makes a great Cabernet Franc, I had to sample this wine as well.

Summit County provides a grape growing terrior that includes sandy loam, clay loam and gravel.  Because the climate is similar to the Loire Valley in France, this provides the potential as a perfect location for growing Cabernet Franc and Chambourcin varietals.

Switching over to sweet wines, Sweet Revenge is a beautiful Ohio rose that the winery has been making for over twenty years.  A blend of Seyval Blanc and French Hybrid wines, this crisp, delicious wine is a classic.

I am always interested in sampling the fruit wines from Ohio wineries because they have the potential to be extremely fruity or combined with grapes, have subtle notes of fruit flavor in the blend.  Blue, a semi-dry blueberry wine was rich in color as well as a little tart which I found to be an absolute lovely combination.

Original sin is the perfect name for this crisp, apple based wine, but it is Space Cowboy that wins my vote with its full peach flavor in every sip.

The sun is starting to set on this beautiful, brisk October evening. I bring myself inside where I can continue admiring the outside view from the beautiful glass windows of the tasting room.

My pizza had just arrived, so I ordered a bottle of Zinfandel, knowing that the winery can repackage the remaining wine for me to take home.

The Winery at Wolf Creek is open year around, with limited hours during the winter season.  Cellar tours are available by appointment and wine tastings are offered daily.  The winery offers a great selection of wine accessories, clothes, gift baskets and of course, wine which ranges from $14 to $24 per bottle.

The bachelorette party is going strong in the tasting room and I stop by to inquire how they enjoyed the wines.  The bride-to-be, dressed in red, mentioned that they had such a difficult selecting a favorite that they purchased one of each to enjoy with their large group.  I told her to beware of the Big Bad Wolf as I exited the winery, happy to see they were having the time of their lives.

Brewfontaine….The Tap of Ohio

Craft beer has made quite an impact on the state of Ohio over the past few years.  With approximately 120 breweries currently in the state, beer lovers may find it difficult to visit each one of them, even over the span of a year.  So why not visit a taproom where you can try a large selection of local brews all under one roof?  And so was the concept for Brewfontaine.  During a recent visit, I had the pleasure of meeting one of the owners, Brian Wall, who is passionate about his new venture which recently opened in November of 2015.

“A lot of thought went into the planning of Brewfontaine,” says Brian. “The process took us about three  to four years.  We knew we wanted to open a place where people could try Ohio craft beers as well as ales from surrounding states.”  The restaurant and bar has nearly 40 craft beers available at a given time by the bottle or on tap.  The selection changes often, so this gives patrons more than one reason to visit to try new local brews.  Visitors can also purchase half gallon growlers to fill up with one of their favorite craft beers to enjoy at home.

In addition to all of the planning that went into opening the restaurant, there was also the challenge of its renovation.  Brian and his co-owners happened upon prime location in downtown Bellefontaine where historical Johnson’s Restaurant once stood.  It had been a well-known eatery for residents in the 1950s but was abandoned about twenty years later, leaving it in major disrepair.   According to Brian, there was extensive damage to the building and all that remained was the interior wall and the Ladies Room sign….even the floor was gone.  With a design in mind and with the magic of local real estate developer, Jason Duff, the building was brought up to code and transformed into the artistic industrial design that it is today.

Although Brewfontaine’s focus is bringing quality brews to its customers, what else makes Brewfontaine such a popular place?  The restaurant and bar also serves Wine on Tap and top shelf liquor for high class drinks.  And from the stellar reviews online, there is also the menu which includes simple starters, savory soups, delectable salads and sandwiches served with their signature house-made IPA pickles.  The restaurant employs a culinary chef, so many of the items on the menu are homemade.

During my visit, I decided to try a flight of five and, with the suggestion of Micki, my server (and Brian’s wife), ordered the Greek Salad as well.   And it wasn’t just ANY salad, it was loaded with olives, feta cheese, red onion, tomatoes, croutons, pepperoncini and peppers.  The ingredients were so fresh and I honestly had a difficult time finishing it, but it tasted so amazing that I couldn’t put my fork down.

I will admit that I am not a beer connoisseur, but I am always up for trying new brews.  So my flight of beers arrived and I started from left to right.  First I tried Barley’s Scottish Ale which originates from Columbus, Ohio, Barley’s Brewing Company.

At first glance this craft beer, Boulevard 80 Acre, looks more like lemonade than an ale.  My take on the wheat ale is that it was very light with a slight hoppy aftertaste giving the Indian Pale Ale a run for its money.

I have now moved on to beer number three and I have selected the Ei8ht Ball Tarnished, really because I liked the name of the ale. Ei8ht Ball Brewing is located just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati in the small town of Bellevue, Kentucky.

My number four selection was based on the fact that Sierra Nevada was probably the first beer I tried outside of the Budweiser family.  I wasn’t sure how I would like the IPA, but even though it was a little hoppy, I could smell the tropical fruit and it reminded me of the Sierra Nevada beer I have come to love.

I have come down to my final selection and decided on Wyder’s Pear Cider.  I have to admit that it almost looks like a two drink glass of chardonnay, but quickly realize at the first taste that it is a sassy cider, with an amazing smell of pears.

Ordering the flight of beers is definitely the most fun way to experience craft beers.  With such a wide selection, I could come back several times to try another flight or two.  And of course, Brewfontaine makes it so easy for craft beer lovers to keep up to date with its beer menu and to know what brands will be coming to the restaurant in the near future.   Just download the BeerMenus app, set up an account and search for Brewfontaine.  Make sure you select them as a restaurant to follow and you will be able to track the information for yourself.   But don’t try to log in while you are at Brewfontaine, with a focus on Eat, Drink and Be Social, they prefer that you make a few friends while you are in town.

Being a new business, what does the future hold for Brewfontaine?  Of course there will always be the opportunity to add new craft beers to the list or make changes to the menu, but I also learned from Brian that there are plans underway to expand and enclose the patio adding an additional 30+ seats to the restaurant.   That is quite a successful accomplishment having only been open for a few months.

But if I had my opinion, it would be that the success of Brewfontaine is the passion that Brian and the owners have for the bar and restaurant.  Brian, who is formerly a surveyor, knows a thing or two about beer.  He started his own home brewing which has helped him understand the process and then put himself through college to strengthen his business skills.  The owners take so much pride in the restaurant that even the employees are required to submit a resume making the extra effort to show their interest in becoming a part of the Brewfontaine family.

But the enthusiasm doesn’t stop with Brian…if you are lucky enough to meet his wife, Micki, you can’t help but feel her heartfelt excitement for her husband’s business as well.  So don’t be surprised if she happens to take your order.  It’s a group effort and everyone is available to pitch in to make Brewfontaine a success.

Bada Bing! Pizzeria, Springfield, Ohio – NOW CLOSED

It was a chilly afternoon and I had not yet tried Bada Bing! Pizzeria which had relocated to a larger space on Springfield, Ohio’s historic Fountain Avenue.

Bada Bing! Pizzeria became a national sensation when in 2015, the owner, Jason Hague, posted a flyer on the door of his business inviting anyone who did not have any money or was hungry to celebrate Thanksgiving with him and his family.  It was such an overwhelming act of kindness that when someone shared his invitation on social media, it went viral and landed him publicity with Fox News all over the country.  Donations poured in to supplement the cost of Jason’s offer to those in need. He was pleasantly overwhelmed and thankful for those who unexpectedly contributed to his cause. On Thanksgiving Day, Bada Bing! was able to feed close to 100 people.

But for those who live in Springfield, Bada Bing! has been a hit with its locals since bringing gourmet pizzas and friendly service to town.

Bada Bing’s humble beginnings found itself in a small neighborhood of Springfield where it quickly outgrew its space.  Working with other locals to revive the downtown area, they found a location on North Fountain Avenue and began the tumultuous work of installing updates and renovations.  With a new wood fire stove, they also expanded their kitchen space downstairs.

In addition to Bada Bing!’s extreme generosity, what I love about this downtown eatery is that they are serving gourmet pizzas with unique flavor combinations.   All of their pies are baked in the woodfire stove, just like an Italian pizzeria.

The Kickin’ Kung Pow Chicken with a spicy teriyaki sauce is crazy delicious and one of my favorites.  Loaded with cheese, grilled chicken, garlic green peppers, red onion, crushed red pepper and peanuts.   This fascinating mix of flavors will have you ordering another before the week is over. Other selections include the Vampire Slayer, the F-Bomb and the Dirty SOB, but if you are in the mood for a super, rich, breathtaking eating experience, order the C.B.R made with garlic butter sauce, four cheeses, grilled chicken, bacon, red onions, tomatoes, and topped with MORE garlic (roasted minced) and ranch sauce.

I was having a difficult time deciding which pizza to order when I learned I could try two different flavor combinations on one pie.  I couldn’t pass up the Kickin’ Kung Pow while the other half was the more mild Mona Lisa, with mozzarella, tomatoes and basil.  On a later visit I ordered the  Award Winning Goombah with lots of spice.

In addition to upscale pizza flavors and decadent sides, Bada Bing! serves craft beer.  Nothing goes better with an outstanding pizza than a nice cold brew.   I ordered the Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale and the Bell’s Oberon at the excellent advice from my knowledgeable  server.

A list of Bada Bing!’s beers on tap are posted on the chalk board to the right of the checkout station.  There is also a generous number of wines and a cooler filled with  bottled beers as well.

So the word is out about Bada Bing!’s pizza and the locals are loving it.  I can’t wait to delve into their calzones, salads, grinders, desserts and appetizers, especially the cinnamon knots and the garlic knots.

Bada Bing!’s can be summed up as a company with fabulous food, awesome customer service and an owner with a big heart.  That is a trifecta for success and a pizzeria I feel proud to support.  And just as their logo states, “It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Bada Bing!”

Hafle Winery’s menu offers a wonderful selection of appetizers, sandwiches,  dinners and salads.  The winery hosts popular weekend cookouts with live music entertainment.

More favorite Springfield eateries:

  • Schuler’s Donuts:   Their chocolate cream-filled doughnut is their best seller…”home of homemade”. The bakery has several locations in Springfield.
  • Simon Kenton Inn:  This historical home is an inn, restaurant and entertainment venue.  With great food, I love the atmosphere of the Simon Kenton Inn.
  • Guerra’s Krazy Tacos:  One of my favorite places to eat in Springfield, Guerra’s is known for their unique gourmet tacos.
  • Salato Deli:  I love stopping by this deli for their charcuterie board
  • Le Torte Dolci Bakery;  Located next to the Salato Deli, this European French bakery also serves amazing gelato.
  • Mike & Rosie’s Deli:  This staple of Springfield is located near the Wittenberg campus and I am extremely fond of their Reuben sandwich.
