Bali, Indonesia: Hotel Nirwana and Lovina Beach’s Charm

Although I enjoyed my stay at the Aditya Beach Resort, I wanted to be closer to the town’s center, to interact with the locals and try a restaurant or two. I found a room at the Nirwana Water Garden Hotel, located on the main strip, which was the perfect location for exploring this charming little village.

As soon as I walked onto the resort, I could see a restaurant on the right, the registration desk in front of me and the pool and bungalows to my left. The property is beautifully decorated and I was thrilled to spend a couple of nights here.

I checked into my room where I was greeted by the neighborhood rabbit that lives on the grounds. I stored my belongings and was ready to find a restaurant for dinner and a couple of beers. I passed the pool and was tempted to take a swim, but I was more excited to explore Lovina and walk the beach.

Slowly wandering the streets to take it all in, I admired the colorful artistry of the statues, wood carvings and offering pedestals. It is not uncommon to see monkey-like figures as well as images of elephants which represent the gods of the Hindu. Most of the artwork is connected to Bali’s strong religious beliefs, which has a large influence on its culture.

The craftsmanship of the Balinese woodwork is exquisite and detailed. The three-dimensional carpentry usually tells a story of human enlightenment or the conflict between good and evil. The displayed artwork invoked a sense of spirituality, regardless of one’s beliefs.

As dusk began to fall over the town, the music grew louder from the local bars. I met up with a couple of vendors, purchased a few necklaces and started looking for a place to enjoy dinner. I stopped halfway from my hotel when I noticed the Kakatua Bar & Restaurant, an open air eatery with patio seating.

I took a seat closest to the street and ordered a nice, cold Bintang beer. After looking through the menu, I selected the red snapper as my main course and watched tourists fill the empty seats surrounding me. At first glance, I thought that the name of the restaurant was named after the Indonesian city of Krakatoa, but my server explained that the Kakatua are the resident cockatoos.

It took awhile for my food to arrive, but it gave me some time to people watch, catch up on my journal and eavesdrop on the table beside me. The red snapper was worth the wait and I enjoyed listening to an Australian guitarist sing James Taylor tunes. It was finally sinking in that I was actually in Bali. The past few days have been so busy that I hadn’t appreciated the fact that I had finally arrived in paradise.

I savored every last bite of my meal and after a second beer, I began making the walk back to the hotel. I looked forward to a peaceful night’s sleep, drifting off with a smile on my face, thankful for the opportunity to explore such an amazing place.

Dolphin Watching at Lovina Beach

Tickets vary from $15 to $18 and the boats seat up to five or six. If you are staying in Lovina Beach, there is a kiosk on the main street, heading towards the beach on the right hand side. If you are staying in South Bali (Kuta, Jimbaran, etc.), contact the concierge for tickets.

Nirwana Water Garden is located in the heart of Lovina Beach. It is a 45-minute drive to the dive site of Menjangan Island. Ngurah Rai International Airport is a 2.5-hour drive away. The hotel can provide hotel transfers for a fee.

Nirwana Restaurant serves Indonesian specialties, with the option of in-room dining. Guests can enjoy a guided tour to visit the dolphins at Lovina Beach, which can be arranged by the Nirwana’s staff.

Another beautiful day in Bali and I was meeting up with my friend Wayan and his family to hike Sekumpul Waterfalls. The weather was calling for rain showers, so we decided to leave the house early to miss as much of the rain as possible. We entered the park and paid our admission in preparation for the hour-long hike to the base of its falls.

Making our descent down the switchbacks, we noticed the magnificent view of the rice terraces opposite the trail. Situated on the side of the hill, the layered crops grew among the staggered rows of palm trees. Our hike took us further into the depths of the valley as a fog began to blanket our path. Soon we could hear the faint sound of the magnificent waterfalls in the distance.

About halfway into the hike, a small detour led us to a café for a moment of rest and refreshments. Along the path I noticed a sign for Kopi Luwak coffee and I was curious to try Bali’s famous coffee. The island’s exotic coffee is unique in that it requires the assistance of the cute little luwak for processing.

The luwak, also known as the Asian palm civet, is a cute little cat-like animal from Indonesia that loves to eat coffee beans. The food passes through its digestive system and the partially digested remains are collected to complete the coffee making process. According to the Balinese, the combination of fermentation and chemicals from the luwak’s digestion is what gives the coffee its unique flavor. It is the most expensive coffee in the world where in the United States one can expect to pay $100 to $600 per pound. A cup of the Kopi Luwak was only $5 US at this cute little cafe.

Piping hot, I sipped on the Kopi Luwak with a little cream and sugar. I really liked the smooth taste and enjoyed that it was prepared perfectly and not at all bitter. After our coffee break, we gathered our belongings and continued our trek down the steep slope. The path led to the river below which we needed to cross over to reach the bottom of the falls. With the water reaching up to our knees, we carefully managed to find our foothold on the slippery rocks and made our way to the other side.

The sound of the falls grew louder and soon we could see the water crashing down upon the rocks. The children giggled as the thick mist tickled their faces and drenched their clothes. There was a small pool where we took a moment to swim beneath the falls and enjoyed the roaring sound of the water tumbling down the cliffs.

Already wet, a torrential rain moved in, taking us by surprise. We needed to begin making the journey back to our car before the water began to rise. Giving one last look towards the waterfall, we were overwhelmed by the surreal view in which the falls seemed to appear out of nowhere. This moment was worth every challenging step of our hike.

The rain did not let up and there was some flooding on the streets as we drove back to the hotel. Saying goodbye to Wayan and his family, I checked into the Lovina Water Garden Hotel and waited out the storm before taking a stroll around the property. I moved hotels to be closer to the little town of Lovina Beach with its row of restaurants and shops. It remained overcast but it was a beautiful part of Bali that was not crowded and overrun with tourists.

I took an afternoon walk to the beach, watching the locals pass by on their mopeds, sometimes three or four on one bike. Vendors were selling beautiful coral necklaces and children were playing in the streets.

I arrived at the beach where I noticed a tall, worn monument where people were congregating on its steps. The column in the center displayed a large dolphin at the top while there were four dolphins that surrounded the base of the pedestal. Lovina Beach is known for its large pods of dolphins and cruises transport passengers in the early morning and evenings to watch them frolicking around the sea.

Taking a closer look at the sculpture, it seemed as though the salt air had taken its toll on these figures. I wondered how long these dolphins had been standing here gazing out into the ocean. I thought about all of the people that had passed by the beach or sat at the base of its pedestal.

I thoroughly enjoyed the laid-back, charming beach town of Lovina and preferred it to the late-night crowds of Kuta. I wished I could have spent more time in this area, but tomorrow we will be leaving for Kuta for a couple of days before flying back to the states. What I love most about the north end of Bali is the solitude and natural beauty that inspires me to explore the world less traveled.

Potential Transportation Costs: There may be an additional cost to travel from southern Bali to the north. Drivers are a great investment and most of them also know the area so well that they double as guides.

Tips for Your Visit: Wear comfortable shoes and if you plan on exploring the base of the waterfall, water shoes are also recommended. The trek can be slippery, so be aware of the conditions of the trail. My driver took me to the entrance and was my guide for the hike and I paid the nominal fee. I also learned that there is another trailhead which starts across from the Lemukh Village registration sign for those that do not want to pay the approximate $1.50 fee.

The restaurant is located in Jalan Binaria (Dolphin Statue Road) only a half a minute walk from the Dolphin Statue towards Angsoka hotel. Free wifi, they deliver as well as offer free transportation in the Lovina area.

I ordered a Bintang, Bali’s local beer and quite a few pieces of sushi and the spicy tuna roll. The fish was amazingly fresh! For dessert, I ordered the banana split and it tasted just like home.

Exploring Bali: Singaraja and Lovina Beach

Just as I had predicted, I had a great night’s sleep at the Aditya Beach Resort on Lovina Beach in Bali. Waking up early, I wanted to walk along the beach at dawn while the weather was still brisk and invigorating. Besides the lonely fisherman and a couple of tourists, I had the beach all to myself. I walked the short length of the coast where rowboats had been pushed up along the sand next to piles of seaweed and debris and birds were searching for their morning breakfast.

On my way back to the hotel, the beach began to liven up with activity. A group of sightseers were stepping into a boat for a dolphin cruise and joggers slipped past the stray dogs.

Lovina is known for its large school of dolphins and early morning cruises are a popular excursion for tourists during season. Watching the boat drift into the horizon, I met the hotel security guard, Ajit, who stopped by to say good morning. Having met him at check in last night, he offered to take me around to the local sites. Since he knows my friend Wayan, I took him up on his offer.

I strolled back to my room to prepare for the day and noticed several pedestals that contained pieces of fruit, flower petals and burning incense. These are the offerings that the Balinese offer up to their gods throughout the day and are visible on the side of the road, sitting on small roadside shrines or near the large temples throughout the island.

Buddhist Monestary in Northern Bali

Ajit returned on his motorcycle and I told him that I would like to visit the Buddhist Monastery. He also suggested a nearby waterfall and the hot springs, so we had a full day ahead of us.

The atmosphere of the monastery is one of reverence and solitude. Although the island is predominantly Hindu, there are two active places of worship for Buddhists in Bali as well.

Beautiful Fountains at the Monastery

The spectacular views of the coast from the Brahma Vihara Arama Buddhist Monastery went on for miles. The tropical trees met up with the beaches of Lovina for a beautiful backdrop. The paintings and sculptures within the monastery were unusually lifelike and three dimensional.

Lily ponds and fountains gave the monastery a religious sense of calm. Protecting their surroundings, the monkey gods took a stand to ward off evil spirits. The soothing sound of water and gentle rustle of leaves from the wind were comforting as I searched for koi fish under the lily pads.

The Buddhist Eightfold Path of Enlightenment

The Eight-Fold Path is the final teaching of the Buddhist Four Noble Truths. A stairway at the monastery representing the steps of these teachings are said to lead to spiritual enlightenment and the end of suffering.

The Brahma Vihara Arama Buddhist Monastery is an exceptionally well maintained temple and open to the public as a place of worship. The grounds are exquisitely manicured and the views out towards the sea from atop of the temple are magnificent. Signs throughout the property strongly communicate that this is not a tourist attraction but rather a temple and should be treated with reverence and respect. Proper attire is required and courtesy must be given to those who visit.

Northern Bali Waterfall

Enjoying a peaceful morning at the temple, I was ready for our next excursion, a hike to one of north Bali’s most treacherous waterfalls. Ajit explained that the falls is a local favorite and is not open to tourists. He guaranteed that this hike would be a challenge but the view would be well worth the trek.

The concrete path was manageable at the start but became narrow as we closed in on the falls. The course quickly changed as the mist produced a muddy trail we were cautiously trying to avoid. Eventually the pathway disappeared and we resorted to rock hopping amidst the rushing water between the stones.

I was close to giving up and turning back when I noticed the shrines appear on the side of the hill. The water coming from the cascades was so strong and powerful that I was frightened I may lose my footing.

We sat for a few moments on a couple of large rocks so I could catch my breath. The mist from the falls felt so cool on my face, dampening my hair and clothes. I decided that I was ready to take a few more steps and as I rounded the corner, I was able to see the highlight of my hike, the larger of the two falls.

I wished I could have enjoyed the view for a while longer, but working to keep myself upright was draining my energy and I was ready to find security back on dry land. The hike back was not as difficult and it seemed as though we reached the entrance in half of the time it took to reach the falls.

Visiting the hot springs could not have been more appropriate after a long hike. Set among the hillside there are three pools of water to enjoy a moment of rest and relaxation. The first pool at the top is the hottest while the bottom is the coolest of the three. I was looking forward to soaking in the springs.

Air Panas was built by the Japanese hundreds of years ago and is said to be therapeutic for those suffering from rheumatic disease. A steady rush of water from the mouths of mythical creatures adds to the fascinating environment of the springs.

I enjoyed the resort for a couple of hours and visited the snack bar before leaving for the hotel.

The Aditya Hotel was hosting an event that consisted of a four course meal and a program which included two young girls performing the Balinese dance of Legong. Known as one of the most popular forms of Indonesian entertainment, the dance consists of intense facial expression, body movements, and intricate finger work accompanied by Gamelan music.

The unique music and vibrant performance were entrancing. Although I was exhausted, I felt satisfied that I had accomplished so much physically, religiously and culturally in one day. I reflected back from the start of my journey and could not have been more pleased. I am ready to do it all over again tomorrow!

Harrah’s, the Perfect Location on the Las Vegas Strip

Vegas is a melting pot of visitors and residents that makes it a city where practically anything can happen. You can see a wide range of fashion from upscale, designer gowns to tube tops and flip flops. It is a town that attracts wannabe rock stars, but none so flamboyant as the costumed KISS impersonators that I had to pass each day to reach our hotel room at Harrah’s. I give them a lot of credit with their perfect makeup, 80’s wigs, silver moonboots, but sporting a thong? Now I’ve seen it all.

After grabbing a cup of coffee at Starbucks, I waited for a group of my friends at our designated meeting place, the statue of the cartoonish casino winners. Harrah’s would be my home for the next five nights and it turned out to be the perfect locale along the Las Vegas Strip. I was provided a room on the 19^th floor that overlooked the pool with the mountains in the distance. The hotel and casino are centrally located so most attractions are within walking distance. The bus station stops here as well which made it easy to catch transportation down to Fremont Street.

Harrah’s also provides quite a few eateries that will fit anyone’s budget. On the first level was Starbucks which we frequented each morning, a Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse (upscale), Oyster Bar (casual), and Fulton Street Food Hall (casual) – which had pizza by the slice. Upstairs we stopped by Toby Keith’s I Love this Bar and Grill for a couple of strong drinks where they serve southern cooking and hot country music. IcePan for dessert includes custom made ice cream. Harrah’s buffet, Flavors is also located on the first level.

Harrah’s has locations throughout the US and provides their patrons a generous rewards system. Once becoming a member of their Total Rewards program, there are perks for playing, dining, shopping or staying at select casinos and resorts.

Later that week I was invited to enjoy a day at the pool where I was provided VIP drink service and use of a cabana. I felt like I was a superstar with so much attention. It was a beautiful sunny day and I was so appreciative to have been included in the anniversary festivities.

Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas

The colossal palace complex of Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas represents the opulence and luxury that only the Romans could have envisioned. Adorned with Romanesque statues and artwork, this fine resort could have easily been a summer home for the rulers of Rome, one of the world’s greatest empires. The mega-resort first opened in the 1960s with its over-the-top reconstruction of the European city’s most memorable monuments, statues and fountains.

Caesar’s Palace would not adequately represent Rome without its Colosseum offering entertainment from such acts as singers Celine Dion and Elton John as well as comedian headliner Jerry Seinfeld. The high-tech version of Rome’s ancient arena seats 41,000 with state of the art lighting systems and sound. While some may not be able to afford the venue’s entertainment, there are a group of animatronic statues that provide free hourly shows called the Fall of Atlantis & Festival Fountain Show.

The main dining attractions of Caesar’s Palace include three star Michelin chef, Guy Savoy’s restaurant, Gordon Ramsay’s Hell Kitchen (opened January 2018) and Pronto by Giada (opened early 2018). In addition to its dining and nightlife, it is no surprise that the Forum Shops are also a major attraction within the casino hotel.

Shopping at Caesar’s Palace

The most dramatic entrance into the Forum Shops is through The Strip. Gargantuan statues and a grand staircase welcome the shopping goddess to over 160 boutique shops to include expensive designers such as Fendi and Armani as well as specialty boutiques and a three story H&M.

Caesar’s Palace Fountains

After a day of shopping, a girl’s best friend is the Qua Baths and Spa. In addition to its spa services, a $25 day pass at the Roman Baths includes the opportunity to feel the heat in the cedar sauna or enjoy the cold of the arctic room.

Late into the night, the resort’s OMNIA nightclub, Pure, is known for its patio providing a view of the strip as well as its DJs spinning the latest chartbusters. Alternatively, for a laid-back atmosphere, drinks at the Spanish Steps are a must.

Exploring Venice in Vegas at the Venetian

Italy is well represented in Las Vegas with its themed hotels. You have Caesar’s Palace from Rome, the Bellagio from The Lakes Region and the Venetian from none other than the beautiful city of Venice. It’s only obvious that Venice would come to Vegas with its history of hosting the first casino. And you can’t forget about Venice’s past reputation for secrets and scandals.

We could not believe the view from our suite with a full size view of the glittering Trump Tower. The gorgeous staterooms decorated in leather and cherry were comfortable and expansive and I would have been happy to have stayed in and ordered their decadent room service.

The Venetian Hotel replaced the Sands which was made famous by the Rat Pack and the filming of the movie “Ocean’s Eleven”. After it was imploded in the mid-1990’s, the area was ready for a new hotel in town! In came the Venetian and a bit of Venice was brought to Vegas! With a stroll over the Rialto, a view of the Campanile (Bell Tower) from the Doge’s Palace and of course, the canals that provide gondola rides. As you stroll through the Palazzo, you will continue to catch glimpses of other Venetian attractions such as the clock tower that have a strong resemblance to Italy’s Venice.

But it’s the Palazzo that is the main attraction as the canals meander through the shopping area. Bridges cross over throughout the galleria and provide a network for the gondolas to pass under as lover’s kiss in hopes of good luck in their relationship. Such a romantic tradition! So as you watch the gondolas or decide to float along the canals for yourself, the setting will help you feel like you are truly in the city of Venice.

So what about all of the celebrity sighting you hear about in Las Vegas? If you came here looking for stars, search no further than the Venetian as this venue hosts the famous London-based wax museum, Madame Tussaud’s. Whether it’s sports, television or music, you can see today’s superstars such as Miley Cyrus, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Tiger Woods and George Clooney all waxed up and looking real. It will feel like going to an A-list party!

You may need to take a break from all of that celebrity action and re-energize at one of the restaurants at the Venetian. Make your way over to the Taqueria Canonita and enjoy a taste of Mexican Soul Food. And if you happen on Happy Hour (3PM to 6PM and later starting at 9PM to close), you may want to order a $5 margarita. There is plenty of seating, but if you want to relax along the canal and watch the gondoliers cautiously paddle their passengers through the waterways, the restaurant recommends that you book a table in advance.

SUSHISAMBA is a colorful restaurant that provides a unique dining experience, with an eclectic assortment of dishes and a generous happy hour of $6 caipirinhas which starts at 4PM to 7PM from Sunday to Friday. Choose from exotic sushi rolls, sushi or other exclusive fish made with a Peruvian, Brazilian flare. My favorite dishes are the Yellowtail Sashimi Ceviche and the Miso-Marinated Chilean Sea Bass, Roasted Organic Vegetables and Oshinko! And of course I cannot break myself away from ordering the Classic Mojito!

There is a wide, diverse selection of restaurants that are located near or within the Venetian. On Restaurant Row, one can find Aquaknox (Seafood), B&B Ristorante (Italian), Cafe Presse (Coffee and Pastries), db Brasserie (French), Delmonico Steakhouse (Steak) and Public House (Gastropub).

Restaurants are also located at the Grand Canal Shoppes for a scenic view of the gondolas. These eateries include Buddy V’s for American-Italian cuisine, Canaletto for Italian, Carlo’s Bakery, Casanova for Mediterranean, Grimaldi’s for NY-style pizza, i (heart) burgers, Mercato della Pescheria for Italian Seafood, French restaurant Paris Baguette, Table 10 (New American), Tintoretto Restaurant & Bakery, Trattoria Reggiano and Zeffrino for Italian Seafood.

After spending the afternoon at the Canyon Ranch SpaClub, check out Canyon Ranch Cafe or Canyon Ranch Grill. Or if you are having a difficult time breaking away from the casino, there are several options available here as well, such as CUT (Modern American), Hong Kong Cafe (Asian), and JuiceFarm (Organic)

The Food Court is another option for fast, quick culinary offerings or B&B Burger and Beer, Lagasse’s Stadium (American), Noodles Asia, OTTO Enoteca Pizzeria, and Rockhouse (American) while more upscale dining locations include Carnevino (Steak), Grand Lux Cafe (Global Cuisine) with two locations in the Venetian and the Palazzo, LAVO (Italian), Morels French Steakhouse & Bistro. TAO Asian Bistro and Yardbird Southern Table & Bar. The Venezia Tower includes French Restaurant Bouchon on the 10th floor.

Poolside one can order from two of Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant’s such as Riva at the Venetian Pool Deck and Solaro at the Palazzo Pool.

There is an exorbitant number of night clubs, bars and lounges in Las Vegas, so should one choose to stay within the properties of the Venetian, there are certainly a great number of options, some which are open 24 hours such as Bellini Bar and Fusion Latin Mixology Bar. Double Helix Wine Bar, Laguna Champagne Bar, LAVO Restaurant Lounge, Rockhouse, and The Lounge at SUSHISAMBA have set hours of operation as well as the TAO NightClub and LAVO Casino Club.

With Venice, all the world is a stage as you cross the Rialto or glimpse through the architecture of the Doge’s Palace, you never know where it may take you. So keep your eyes wide open and you may even catch a glimpse of your Cassanova.

Excalibur, Las Vegas

The Excalibur reminds me more of a bouncy ball playhouse than a resort, but with its colorful watch towers and lego-like drawbridges, it represents the more gaudy side of Las Vegas. Sporting its whimsical façade, I imagined a hotel of small little tots without adult supervision playing a wide range of Chuck E. Cheese games and jumping into piles of candy.

Stepping into the dimly lit stone interior of the castle, I immediately took notice of the hotel’s ancient Renaissance architecture. The resort’s facilities include an arcade for children in the fun dungeon and The Tournament of Kings dinner show with jousting and a primitive meal leaving the family looking for more wet naps.

Although there are plenty of activities for children, the Excalibur also caters to adults offering headliners from Cher, the Australian Bee Gees, George Strait and the ever popular male review, the Thunder from Down Under. Additional entertainment options include the Ultimate 4-D Experience, The Spa and for some, The Buffet.

I enjoyed my stroll through the Excalibur and its King Arthur-style resort, but I have to admit it would have been more memorable to have had the opportunity to gamble with the King and his Knights of the Round Table.

Moving to the OC, 2004

I was so excited when I was offered a clinical trial position in Southern California. I had a couple of weeks to pack my belongings and make the cross country move. My brother had a few friends who said they would help me pack and then he would drive with me to San Clemente and stay for a few days enjoying the California coast.

After a couple of nights in hotels, we finally arrived and rested an additional night before moving into my second floor, one-bedroom apartment. With some help from my new colleagues, we finally completed the move and had some time to visit the beach before sunset. Fishermen cast their poles over the edge in hopes of catching their dinner. We opted to visit Fisherman’s Restaurant on the pier.

We found a parking spot in the lot surrounded by palm trees and I wanted to step onto the beach and was curious to see if the water was cold. We learned that the haze was a part of June Gloom which is what the locals call the month of June. The temperature is a consistent 70 degrees most of the days in San Clemente and all year around.

The sunset was an incredible golden and orange as it set out into the horizon. From that moment, I promised myself that I would make my way to the beach each night just to witness the beauty of the setting sun.

It was darker now as we drive through the center of town, back to Avenida Vista Montana. I could definitely become accustomed to the beauty of SoCal and will make the most of it as long as I am here.

Freeport, Bahamas: A Welcome Change in Itinerary

Hurricane Gilbert stunned the port towns of Cozumel and Playa del Carmen in 1988. Due to the devastating damage, our ship’s itinerary quickly changed to include the Bahamian ports of Nassau and Freeport over the next couple of months.

Our first stop was Freeport, located on Grand Bahama Island. This port offered many of the same amenities as our Yucatan Peninsula ports, so it was a perfect choice. It was such a great stop for visitors who were interested in watersports, sightseeing, shopping and dining.

Recent Hurricane Dorian, touching down in the Bahamas on August 24, 2019, was one of the most powerful hurricanes to hit the Bahamas in over 65 years. Information provided throughout this post may require updating due to the recent event, so check for updated information online.

Since the early days of cruise vacations, the islands of the Bahamas have been a popular destination. During my days of working with the cruise lines, Freeport was a shopper’s paradise and offered a variety of activities in addition to its international restaurants.

One of Freeport’s most popular shopping plazas was the International Bazaar consistently bustling with tourists. I was surprised to learn that today, the Bazaar has become a ghost town, with limited shopping and dining, quite different than my past experience. Much of the change has been attributed to a history of hurricanes that have left the island in need of repair. A new shopping area has been developed near downtown Freeport and is much more visitor-friendly. For shoppers who are into haggling for a deal, check out the straw market to practice your bartering skills for souvenirs and merchandise.

The bazaar, in keeping with the international theme, was divided into sections based on countries of the world. The architecture of each designated location included France, America, the Orient and Scandinavia. It remains one of the oldest shopping regions on the island.

In front of the International Bazaar was the Bavarian Beer Garden which provided a wide range of lunch and dinner items. Continuing the tradition today, the menu highlights the following options: Conch salad, crab salad, fried chicken, lobster and French fries. With the best prices in the Bazaar, they also offer deals on tropical cocktails. Outdoor seating is perfect for people watching and enjoying the sunshine.

Outside of the International Bazaar is a brightly colored directional sign that shows the distance from Freeport to popular worldwide destinations. It was the first time I had ever seen anything like it, so I thought it clever to know how far I was from some of the other islands as well as major cities including, New York: 1015 miles, Bimini: 53 miles, Montreal: 1323 miles and San Salvador: 285 miles.

A nearby attraction to the International Bazaar and Straw Market was the Bahamas Princess Resort and Casino. Built in the 1970’s the resort was later named the Bahamia Royal Oasis Resort. Sitting on close to 1,000 acres, which included a hotel with pools and casino, the property eventually closed due to hurricane and tropical storm damage.

The most recent information regarding the property came from a 2010 news story which reported that there was a fire at the Princess Towers, which started on the 7^th floor.

Another shopping area is the Port Lucaya marketplace and seems today to be much more popular than the International Bazaar. Activities from this port include scuba and snorkeling, boat tours and rentals, as well as an opportunity to swim with dolphins There is a shopping mall nearby which includes a drugstore and offers duty free deals on perfume and watches. If you are searching for cheaper prices for alcohol, your best bet is to head downtown.

In the Port Lucaya shopping area, you can also find restaurants, but downtown is where you will find Bahamian local dishes and fast food restaurants such as Burger King and Pizza Hut.

While in Port Lucaya, stop by to see the lighthouse. It has since been painted with red and white stripes and visible from the shopping area.

The town of Freeport has not been without its own natural disasters over the years. And although they have faced many challenges, they have worked together to make a huge comeback in the tourism industry. It was just a matter of time. I look forward to returning again soon to see how things have changed since my last visit to the beautiful islands of the Bahamas.
