You’re at Home at Meranda-Nixon Winery, Ripley, Ohio

Located in Ripley, Ohio, east of Cincinnati, is Meranda-Nixon Winery.  Surrounded by beautiful vineyards in a gorgeous rural setting, this winery is the perfect location for scenic views, total relaxation and much-needed wine therapy.

The charming winery looks like a page out of Country Living  magazine with its fashionable displays and bottles of wine for purchase.   It was a busy Saturday morning and the tasting bar was crowded with wine enthusiasts and first time visitors. Eagerly waiting to ease into an open spot, I couldn’t help but eavesdrop on several conversations to decide which wines I wanted to sample.

Maura Meranda, co-owner of the vineyard, reached over the crowd to hand me a wine list and welcomed me to the winery.   I began my tasting with the Chardonnay, described as “aged in oak barrels…starting with a buttery flavor followed with a toasty oak flavor with a hint of lemongrass and butterscotch followed with a pleasant citrus finish”.  This complex wine is full of flavor and has a heavenly, buttery smell (Imagine an oaky hot buttered popcorn…yum!).  It won the 2016 Gold Medal Winner in the Ohio Wine Competition.

Easing into the semi-sweet wines, the Trotter White Wine is my next selection which has “tropical flavors with a smooth finish. Summer in a bottle!”   This would be a fabulous wine chilled and enjoyed on a hot summer day.

The winery’s 2014 Catawba Estate wine is described as “a wonderful blush wine balanced with raspberry and strawberry flavors”.  I loved the sweet hints of fruit that lingered for a perfect, smooth finish and decided to purchase a bottle to enjoy later.

Sparkling wines are oh-so-fabulous and there is nothing better than a cold bottle on a hot summer day or for a lovely, winter celebration.  Meranda-Nixon’s Estate Sparkling Catawba is absolutely refreshing, winning a Silver Medal in the Ohio Wine Competition.

Crossing over into red wine territory, I am ready to try the Red Oak Creek, a “blend of Traminette and Norton grapes and is aged in stainless steel.  This semi-sweet wine has pleasing berry and raspberry flavors.  Enjoy room temperature or chilled.”  I had just recently been introduced to the Traminette grapes, which I learned is a French-American hybrid native to the state of Indiana.  Known to sustain cold temperatures, it is resistant to fungal diseases and is a popular grape among Ohio wine makers.   The Norton grape, however, was quite new to me.  Used in producing a more dry wine, the Norton was first grown  in the state of Virginia gaining popularity in the 1830s.

For a great wine to drink with burgers, the winery produces their Estate Cabernet Franc which is described as a wine which has “cherry flavors followed by hints of vanilla and a smooth peppery oak finish!”  (Pepper?  I am always looking for that perfect spicy wine).

Winning the 2015 Silver Medal in the Ohio Wine Competition is the 2013 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon that is a “ruby red wine with black cherry notes from start to finish with hints of vanilla and tobacco.”  This wine comes highly recommended with steak.

Although they only had a few bottles left, Maura poured me a sample of the 2013 Estate Norton.  One of their best wines to date, it won the 2015 Silver Medal in the Ohio Wine Competition.  I enjoyed the smooth, complex taste of this “full bodied, deep ruby red wine that has a little bit of a tart, sweet and bold berry flavor.  It has a delicate but smooth oak finish and is aged 12 months in 100% American Oak!”

Enjoying the combination of pepper and vanilla, the 2013 Estate Reserve Cabernet Franc was one of my favorite wines at Meranda-Nixon.  This grape grows well in southern Ohio due to warmer temperatures so the grapes can ripen on the vine prior to harvest.  “Black cherry on the mid-palate…it shows complex aromas of freshly crushed fruit (blackberry and plum) pepper and tobacco. Velvet smooth tannins, dense and rich, this elixir fills every corner of the mouth its decadence.”  In addition to winning Best of Show, it also took home the Double Gold Medal in the 2016 Ohio Wine Competition.  James Suckling, former editor of Wine Spectator, compared Meranda’s Cabernet Franc to those wines made in France.

With a two-hour drive home, I decided to complete my tasting and stock up on a few of my favorite wines.  This has been one of the best wine tastings I have experienced in Ohio to date and the wines are of superior quality.  But don’t take it from me, even their dog Lucy likes to chew the corks.

I had the wonderful opportunity to sit down with Maura Meranda to learn more about the history of the winery and to enjoy a glass of wine and the beautiful view.  She explained to me that her husband Seth grew up in Ripley on his family’s tobacco farm.  With over 100 acres, they provided tobacco for Philip Morris until 2003.  Having purchased half of the farm, Seth and his late wife Tina decided to start a vineyard with only three acres.  In 2007, they opened the Meranda-Nixon Winery, planted more grapes and made wine until her passing in 2012.

Seth’s passion for winemaking continued the operation.  He later met Maura and they were a perfect match for producing some of Ohio’s fabulous award winning wines.  What impressed me the most was that I also had the opportunity to meet their children.  It was such a pleasure watching them work alongside their parents and providing tours of the vineyards.  At the age of 15, Austin was so knowledgeable about the wine-making process and telling me about the grapes they grow in the vineyard (I see a future winemaker in the making).

My visit to Meranda-Nixon Winery was more than just a tour and a tasting.  They are a family that loves to share their desire to make great wines. They are committed to giving their visitors an enjoyable experience with an atmosphere that is both welcoming and relaxing.

You may arrive at Meranda-Nixon Winery as a guest, but don’t be surprised if you leave this beautiful place feeling like family.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Westcott House in Springfield, Ohio

Frank Lloyd Wright is credited with designing over four hundred homes, commercial buildings and other works to include The Westcott House located in Springfield, Ohio.  An architect with a vision beyond his time, Mr. Wright’s designs and influence have made him one of the most famous architects in the world.  The Prairie-style home was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Burton and Orpha Westcott, completed in 1908.   After many years of decline, the home was purchased by The Westcott House Foundation in 2000 and a $5.8 million dollar renovation ensued.  From the restoration to the home’s structure and architecture, the foundation has also focused on bringing back the furniture and restoring the gardens during the time of the Westcotts.  The masterpiece was opened to the public for tours beginning in 2005.

As visitors enter the museum through a side entrance from Greenmount Street, they will find a gift shop as well as a small cinema in the area of the home that was once the garage.  The Visitor’s Center displays various items that showcase the architectural designs of Frank Lloyd Wright and are available for purchase.  The tour was led by docent Mary Ellen who provided a thorough overview of The Westcott House, Frank Lloyd Wright as well as the Westcott family.

Having moved from Richmond, Indiana, Burton Westcott became a prominent resident of Springfield due to his successful career in the automobile industry.  It would be his wife, Orpha, having come upon the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, who would commission him to design and build their home.  Jeanne, the oldest of the two Westcott children, lived here until her marriage to Richard Rodgers.  John, born in Springfield in 1903, would live in Italy to attend Montessori School for his education and return home until his parent’s passing in the 1920s.   At the time of Orpha’s untimely, tragic death, Burton’s automobile business was in decline. His attempt to save the failing venture would be unsuccessful and lead to a decline in his health resulting in his death in 1926.

The Westcott House is considered one of Wright’s most significant homes as it was designed after Wright’s visit to Japan.  There are various features in the residence from its furniture to the light fixtures that suggest this Japanese influence.   With a total of sixteen rooms, the home was built to accommodate the Westcott’s love of entertaining.  From its exceptional living room and fireplace to its exquisite dining area, the blueprint also included a reception space for receiving their guests.

Throughout the home, Wright’s emphasis on drawing one’s eye to a horizontal perspective is exhibited by the skylight and dining room.  From the stonework to the fireplace to the chimney, there is beauty in Wright’s use of organic architecture referred to as Wright’s First Golden Age, a style which ran from around 1893 to 1910.  Wright’s Prairie-style construction of the Walcott House is very similar to the Robie House in Chicago.

There are so many exciting aspects of The Westcott that one finds intriguing to include the use of cantilevered overhangs applied to the low-pitched roof of this home. From the French doors that lead to the pergola to the wrap around windows, Wright consistently incorporates the use of natural light and nature to the interior of his architecture and designs as seen in the earth tones and textures exhibited throughout the home.

Wright had a love for the dramatic.  While the living spaces were more modest, it was the public, entertaining spaces that were the focal point of the home and the most fascinating.  Built in bookcases, seating around the fireplace and a buffet are some of the features of The Westcott House that showcase his incredible talent.   The design of the dining room table is also somewhat intriguing.  At each corner, Wright included a tower-like lighting structure to increase illumination to the room.

The tour ended in the garden of the home where the metal works and awnings of the exterior could be explored.   The gardens are beautiful in the spring and summer when the flowers are in bloom.  It would have been a perfect outdoor space for the Westcott children.

A visit to The Westcott House includes a guided tour of the public spaces of the home such as the library, the family room and the dining room.  The private living quarters include the kitchen and pantry, the maids’ rooms, Burton and Orpha’s bedrooms, closet space and powder rooms as well as the rooms of John and Jeanne, the Westcott Children.

The Westcott House is located in Springfield, Ohio on the corner of Greenmount Avenue and High Street.  You can find the location on your GPS by entering 85 South Greenmount Avenue, Springfield, OH 45504.  There is plenty of visitor parking on Greenmount.

I could spend hours strolling the Heart of Country Shoppe, but when I visit, I can’t wait to have lunch at Teaberries.   I always start my lunch with a piece of yummy, moist orange bread.  Known for their wide varieties of chicken salad sandwiches, I always revert to the House Favorite, the Midwest Delight, served on a butter croissant.   If you have room, try their homemade carrot cake or peanut butter pie.

More favorite Springfield eateries:

  • Schuler’s Donuts:   Their chocolate cream-filled doughnut is their best seller…”home of homemade”. The bakery has several locations in Springfield.
  • Simon Kenton Inn:  This historical home is an inn, restaurant and entertainment venue.  With great food, I love the atmosphere of the Simon Kenton Inn.
  • Guerra’s Krazy Tacos:  One of my favorite places to eat in Springfield, Guerra’s is known for their unique gourmet tacos.
  • Salato Deli:  I love stopping by this deli for their charcuterie board
  • Le Torte Dolci Bakery;  Located next to the Salato Deli, this European French bakery also serves amazing gelato.
  • Mike & Rosie’s Deli:  This staple of Springfield is located near the Wittenberg campus and I am extremely fond of their Reuben sandwich.

Where to Drink: 

  • Mother Stewart’s Brewing Company: Springfield’s only brewery, Mother Stewart’s showcases nine craft beers produced onsite.

Reaching Sioux Falls, South Dakota from Ohio! What a Drive

With an early morning departure of 5AM, I have set out for my week’s vacation out west.  The estimated number of miles I plan on traveling today are approximately 925 (Now that’s a lot of driving!). Estimated drive time is 13.5 hours with an added 2 hours for stops.  Arrival time estimation is 8:30PM Central time (will gain one hour).   Today I will pass through the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Iowa.  My route will take me from  I-70 West catching  I-74 West in Indianapolis.  Next I will take I-80 East and finally I-29 North.

Darkness continued to cover the sky as I left my home state of Ohio.  I made my first gas stop in Clayton, Indiana where I purchased a $20 tank of gas.  In Le Roy, Illinois, I payed $25 for fill up the tank and I was good until making a stop at the Taylor Pick Quick in Mo Valley, Iowa to refuel, costing me $24.

Missouri River, South Dakota

My drive was uneventful and I had great weather!  Overcast and no rain, what a perfect day to be on the road!  Most of the drive is flat and I find myself passing by farmlands and long stretches of land.

I have made great time as I pull into the hotel and check into the Days Inn, Sioux Falls which is located on Gateway Boulevard, conveniently located off of the highway.  It is 6:30PM Central taking me about 13.5 hours including stops.  I made great time but it was definitely a LONG drive!  Left OH at 5:10AM;  arrived in Indiana at 6:36AM;  arrived in IL (8:51AM, eastern);  arrived in IA (12:04PM, eastern);  arrived at the SD border (5:36PM, eastern/4:36PM central).  Wanted to check out the Falls tonight instead of waiting until the next day (which was scheduled for tomorrow).  The sun was just starting to set and it was a beautiful evening.

Stopped at Taco John’s on the way to seeing the falls for a couple of tacos and a diet coke. This cute little taco place has been in business since 1969, and is a spicier version of Taco Bell.

I ordered two tacos which tasted like Taco Bell with a little more heat.

What to Eat: 

  • Buffalo:  A meat substitute for beef which is much healthier to eat.
  • Chokecherries are a Native American cherry that is made into jam, preserves, butter, wine, jelly and sauce.  Wojapi is a chokecherry sauce.
  • Dakota Martini is made of three-fourths beer and one-fourth tomato juice
  • Fleisch Kuchele is a meat pie originating from Germans who lived in Russia.  The dough is filled with meat and onions, then deep fried until the pastry is hot and flaky.
  • Hot Beef Commercial, also known as hot beef sandwich, beef combination, hot beef combo and hot beef combination.  This is a sandwich made of real mashed potatoes and chunks of seasoned roast beef sandwiched between two pieces of white bread and smothered with homemade gravy until it floods the plate.
  • Indian Fry Bread is the state bread of South Dakota, a recipe of the local Indians.
  • Indian Tacos are made with a specially spiced beef and beans, cheese, lettuce, sour cream, tomatoes, onion, black olives and house made picante sauce on the top.
  • Kolache is an amazing Czech dessert made from pastry and filled with fruit filling such as apple, cherry, lemon, apricot, prune and strawberry.
  • Kuchen is German for cake and in South Dakota, visitors can enjoy this pastry filled with custard and fruit.
  • Lefse is a flat potato bread coming from Norwegian-American origin and served with butter
  • Mocha Cakes, also known as Blarney stones, are square or rectangular blocks of light and airy white cake.  Frosted on all sides with vanilla buttercream, they are rolled in lightly salted crushed peanuts for ideal flavor and texture.
  • Pasties are savory hand pies.
  • Tiger Meat is South Dakota’s answer to steak tartare.
  • Wasna is a buffalo and berry dish passed down by the Lakota Indians.
  • Zebra Donuts are marbled chocolate and vanilla donuts that is fried, dunked in sweet glaze and hand-dipped in homemade chocolate frosting which feeds 15.
