Cantwell Cliffs at Hocking Hills

It was a beautiful weekend of hiking throughout Hocking Hills State Park and I wanted to find a short, moderate hike that would be a little challenging as well as scenic.  Cantwell Cliffs Loop was the perfect trail measuring less than 2 miles featuring gorges and a gorgeous waterfall.  Located 17 miles from Old Man’s Cave, this would also be a convenient stop on my way back home to Columbus.

The fall leaves had collected along the edges of the trail .  As I reached the top of the stairs, I caught a glimpse of a bushy tail rushing up beech a tree.

Created by the erosion of the rock caused by the Buck Run tributary, the Cantwell trail runs through both the gorge and the rim of the cliffs.  The stairways leading up to the rim were steep and made for a great work out, a section of the trail known as Fat Woman’s Squeeze.

A closer look at the Blackstone rock showed striations as well as small caverns.  Thin layers of moss covered the boulders and streaming lines of ants were leaving from their little cave homes in search of food.

The scenery throughout this hike was unique with twisted trees and tight spaces between the rocks.  Quietly enjoying my surroundings, I could hear the crunching of leaves beneath my boots and the occasion tweet from a bird.

Ascending the trail, I looked back to see the thick woods of white poplar trees.  The wind was beginning to pick up with the light flutter of branches and leaves and soon I had approached the waterfall.

While I was excited to see the waterfall, it was only a trickle  of water.  The sound coming from the small stream and droplets echoed off of the rocks as the water slowly reached the ground.  I as a little disappointed that there was not much of a fall, so I will ahve to return again to see it this summer.   I always love an excuse to hike.

  • Tips for Your Visit:  Where sturdy shoes or hiking boots and during the rainy seasons, you may want a walking stick to keep from falling.  Early morning hikes are best in season as the trails can fill up.  Try hiking the trail during each of the seasons for a different perspective.

Cedar Falls at Hocking Hills

One of my favorite childhood memories of visiting Hocking Hills State Park was hiking to Cedar Falls.   Starting our adventure at the trailhead of Ash Cave, we would pack a picnic lunch setting out towards Old Man’s Cave as our final destination.  Today, I was hiking with my friend Sarah and it brought back such great childhood memories.

It was easy to follow the trail as the pathway was marked by blue blazes, a section of Ohio’s Buckeye Trail. At the start of our trek, we hiked inside of the gorge and later reached the rim for some spectacular views.

There was a small chill in the air as we were surrounded by the local Black Hand Sandstone and bare hemlock trees.  The water had frozen over and waterfalls seemed suspended in ice.

We finally reached the fifty foot drop of Cedar Falls in the valley of Queer Creek.   While not the tallest or most breathtaking, these falls are the largest in volume than other falls throughout the park.  This was the reward for hiking Cedar Falls, so we took in the view and decided it was time for lunch before continuing the second half of our hike.

Conkle’s Hollow Rim Trail

Conkle’s Hollow State Nature Preserve is a part of the Hocking Hills State Park system.

There are two trails within the nature preserve and I began my hiking adventure with the rim trail which is 2.5 miles long and promises some spectacular views.

A set of stairs leads to the start of the trail taking me along the top of the gorge.

At the beginning of the trail there is a steep climb so a set of chains have been installed for hikers who may need some assistance to make it up the hill.

Looking down into the gorge from the rim trail, it is no surprise that some believe this to be the deepest gorge in the state of Ohio.

Gnarly tree roots occasionally appear along the trail so it is important for hikers to be aware of them so they don’t trip, fall or become injured.

I carefully looked over the cliffside to determine how high I was standing above the gorge below.  The views from here are breathtaking.

There are moments along my hike where I stop to take in the amazing scenery.   I can only imagine this hike and how spectacular it must be in the fall when the leaves are changing.

The challenges of hiking the Conkle’s Hollow Rim Trail

The Conkle’s Hollow Rim trail took me about 2.5 hours to complete which left me plenty of time to hike the Gorge trail below, a 1.2 mile loop.  I am looking forward to exploring the gorge after having seen it from above.  This will give me the opportunity to photograph some of the frozen waterfalls along my route.

Conkle’s Hollow Gorge Trail

There was a dead quiet as I approached the trail head for the Conkle’s Hollow Gorge Trail.  I had just completed the two and a half mile Conkle’s Hollow Rim Trail and was ready to tackle the three mile hike through the gorge.  Conkle’s Hollow State Nature Preserve is a part of the Hocking Hills State Park near Athens, Ohio with some of the best hiking in Ohio.

The temperatures had been below freezing for several days.  While the gorge sheltered me from the cold winds from the rim, the wintry conditions within the crevices and caves protected the spectacular frozen waterfall formations.

Looking up from the gorge trail, I noticed the path I had just taken along the rim. As I took a moment in search of a hiker or two along the edge, I became more aware of the tall, still trees and the outcropping of rocks.

Through the trees there were several small crevices that were not reachable from the path.  Escaping the cold, I wondered what animals could be hibernaring inside of them.

I passed a cave-like structure of sandstone to my right and then climbed the stairs to explore the beautiful colors and pitted markings unique to each of the rocks.

Looking up into the rock formations, the porous sandstone seemed to make a great home for insects.

I looked up towards the sky one last time making my way back to the trailhead.  I was reminded of the beauty of winter hikes and the unique features of the gorge.  Considered a favorite of many, I have always made a stop along the gorge and the rim during my visits to Hocking Hills State Park.

The trail took nearly an hour to complete and I was ready to move on to Old Man’s Cave.  What a great start to a beautiful day of hiking.

  • Admission Fee:  Free. All state parks in Ohio are free.
  • Hours:  Open daily and closes at dark.
  • Tips for Your Visit:  While there are no campsites nor lodges, cottages and cabins.  There are several local business that offer these services.  Stay on the trails to ensure you do not become lost.  Wear appropriate hiking shoes/comfortable shoes for hiking. While dog are permitted at the park they are not allowed in the state nature preserves such as Conkle’s Hollow and Rockbridge.

While I usually stay with my sister and her family in nearby Athens, I learned about Pine Creek Horseman’s Camp for a local friend.  This property offers gorgeous luxury cabins as well as campsites and is perfect for visitors bringing their horses for trailriding.
