Bali, Indonesia: Landscapes, Lewaks and Lovina Beach

Another beautiful day in Bali and I was meeting up with my friend Wayan and his family to hike Sekumpul Waterfalls.  The weather was calling for rain showers, so we decided to leave the house early to miss as much of the rain as possible.  We entered the park and paid our admission in preparation for the hour-long hike to the base of its falls.

Making our descent down the switchbacks, we noticed the magnificent view of the rice terraces opposite the trail.  Situated on the side of the hill, the layered crops grew among the staggered rows of palm trees.  Our hike took us further into the depths of the valley as a fog began to blanket our path.  Soon we could hear the faint sound of the magnificent waterfalls in the distance.

About halfway into the hike, a small detour led us to a café for a moment of rest and refreshments.  Along the path I noticed a sign for Kopi Luwak coffee and I was curious to try Bali’s famous coffee.  The island’s exotic coffee is unique in that it requires the assistance of the cute little luwak for processing.

The luwak, also known as the Asian palm civet, is a cute little cat-like animal from Indonesia that loves to eat coffee beans.  The food passes through its digestive system and the partially digested remains are collected to complete the coffee making process.  According to the Balinese, the combination of fermentation and chemicals from the luwak’s digestion is what gives the coffee its unique flavor.  It is the most expensive coffee in the world where in the United States one can expect to pay $100 to $600 per pound.  A cup of the Kopi Luwak was only $5 US at this cute little cafe.

Piping hot, I sipped on the Kopi Luwak with a little cream and sugar.  I really liked the smooth taste and enjoyed that it was prepared perfectly and not at all bitter.  After our coffee break, we gathered our belongings and continued our trek down the steep slope.  The path led to the river below which we needed to cross over to reach the bottom of the falls.  With the water reaching up to our knees, we carefully managed to find our foothold on the slippery rocks and made our way to the other side.

The sound of the falls grew louder and soon we could see the water crashing down upon the rocks.  The children giggled as the thick mist tickled their faces and drenched their clothes.  There was a small pool where we took a moment to swim beneath the falls and enjoyed the roaring sound of the water tumbling down the cliffs.

Already wet, a torrential rain moved in, taking  us by surprise.  We needed to begin making the journey back to our car before the water began to rise.  Giving one last look towards the waterfall, we were overwhelmed by the surreal view in which the falls seemed to appear out of nowhere.  This moment was worth every challenging step of our hike.

The rain did not let up and there was some flooding on the streets as we drove back to the hotel.  Saying goodbye to Wayan and his family, I checked into the Lovina Water Garden Hotel and waited out the storm before taking a stroll around the property.  I moved hotels to be closer to the little town of Lovina Beach with its row of restaurants and shops.  It remained overcast but it was a beautiful part of Bali that was not crowded and overrun with tourists.

I took an afternoon walk to the beach, watching the locals pass by on their mopeds, sometimes three or four on one bike.  Vendors were selling beautiful coral necklaces and children were playing in the streets.

I arrived at the beach where I noticed a tall, worn monument where people were congregating on its steps.    The column in the center displayed a large dolphin at the top while there were four dolphins that surrounded the base of the pedestal. Lovina Beach is known for its large pods of dolphins and cruises transport passengers in the early morning and evenings to watch them frolicking around the sea.

Taking a closer look at the sculpture, it seemed as though the salt air had taken its toll on these figures.  I wondered how long these dolphins had been standing here gazing out into the ocean.  I thought about all of the people that had passed by the beach or sat at the base of its pedestal.

I thoroughly enjoyed the laid-back, charming beach town of Lovina and preferred it to the late-night crowds of Kuta.  I wished I could have spent more time in this area, but tomorrow we will be leaving for Kuta for a couple of days before flying back to the states.  What I love most about the north end of Bali is the solitude and natural beauty that inspires me to explore the world less traveled.

  • Admission Fee:  20,000 Indonesian Rupiah (IDR)
  • Potential Transportation Costs:  There may be an additional cost to travel from southern Bali to the north.  Drivers are a great investment and most of them also know the area so well that they double as guides.
  • Hours:  Daily, open 24 hours
  • Amenities:  Food and Drink Stalls, Gazebo, Trekking Guide
  • Scenic View:   Gorgeous views of the waterfalls while taking the path to the base of the falls.  Meet the lewak on the property!
  • Length of the Tour:  Minimum of 1.5 hours, depending on how much time you want to spend at the base of the falls
  • Tips for Your Visit:  Wear comfortable shoes and if you plan on exploring the base of the waterfall, water shoes are also recommended.   The trek can be slippery, so be aware of the conditions of the trail. My driver took me to the entrance and was my guide for the hike and I paid the nominal fee.  I also learned that there is another trailhead which starts across from the Lemukh Village registration sign for those that do not want to pay the approximate $1.50 fee.

The restaurant is located in Jalan Binaria (Dolphin Statue Road) only a half a minute walk from the Dolphin Statue towards Angsoka hotel.  Free wifi, they deliver as well as offer free transportation in the Lovina area.

I ordered a Bintang, Bali’s local beer and quite a few pieces of sushi and the spicy tuna roll.  The fish was amazingly fresh!   For dessert, I ordered the banana split and it tasted just like home.

What to Eat: 

  • Babi Guling:  Suckling pig, which is similar to BBQ pork in the US.
  • Bakso Soup:  Indonesian soup made with meatballs, noodles, spices, vegetables and broth
  • Gado-Gado:  A cold salad of vegetables served with a peanut sauce
  • Nasi Goreng:  Fried noodles with lots of vegetables and a choice of meat, topped with peanuts and an egg.
  • Pisang Goreng:  Fried Bananas, served with palm sugar, honey, flaked coconut or ice cream
  • Sate Ayam:  Chicken on a stick usually served with a peanut sauce
  • Spring Rolls:  Crispy pastry filled with minced meat and mixed vegetables and then fried, usually served with a chili sauce

Temples, Monkeys and Seafood in South Bali

As we left Ubud and traveled towards Kuta, it was quite clear that we were headed back to city life.  With a short drive through rush hour, we saw several buses, cars, dump trucks and a large number of motorbikes. Soon we arrived in the city of Kuta with its beachfront hotels and upscale restaurants.

Since I wasn’t sure how long I would be staying in northern Bali, I did not make hotel reservations for the latter part of my vacation.  Arriving in Kuta, I stopped by the Hard Rock Hotel where I stayed the first night, but unfortunately, there were no rooms available for a short term stay.  Hotels in Kuta book up fast, even in the off-season.

I was hoping to find a place where I could relax and hang out by a pool, so my friend Wayan suggested we try the bungalows located around the corner.  With a setting of solace and quiet, I was happy that the Kuta Puri Bungalows had space available.  The property and location was perfect and happened to be one of the best accommodations I had ever experienced, staying a few nights in the Luxury Bungalow.

Waking early, I enjoyed the hotel’s complimentary breakfast and decided to make plans for seeing more of South Bali.  I wanted to visit the Uluwatu Temple, known for its spectacular ocean views and resident monkeys but my friends had already left to go back to Lovina Beach.  With the help of the hotel, I was able to find a local driver who would take me to the temple, wait with me until I had completed my tour and could recommend a seafood lunch on Jimbaran Beach. As my driver dropped me off at the temple, I was welcomed by a troop of monkeys.  I watched them as they eagerly taunted a group of visitors, stealing their belongings in the parking lot.

Before entering the temple, I wrapped the sarong around my waste to cover my knees.  Many of the Hindu temples are strict about the dress of visitors and require that the shoulders and knees are covered prior to entering.  Several of them loan out sarongs as a cover-up which can be returned at the end of their visit.

It was windy outside with overcast skies, and I was excited to visit one of the most dramatic temples of Bali, perched on a cliff high above the sea.    D10 View from Uluwatu, 1.8.13

A pathway following along the coast led me past a steep cliff before arriving at the temple.  I could hear the faint sound of waves crashing against the rocky bluff.   The crystal blue waters with their white foam disappeared into the cave-like tunnels beneath the craggy rocks.

The temple was closing in and I could hardly see the tourists in the distance.  I was nervous in anticipation as I thought about standing along the edge of the cliff.  Climbing higher, the wind began to pick up so I started to hang on tightly to the railing until I reached the top.  The view of the ocean extended for miles and looking down made me weak in the knees.  What an exhilarating experience!  Bali 914

I slowly wandered to an adjacent open-air building where monkeys were playing, begging from visitors and sharing their food with their friends. Tourists were tossing fruit and coconuts towards them and those that had their fill went back to playing around and grooming each other affectionately.

While the adult monkeys were eating, it was the baby monkeys that stole the show.  Tumbling over each other and playing a lively game of tag, their energy was adorable. Their big brown eyes and tiny features made them all the more lovable.   I could have stayed here for hours but it was time for lunch along the beach and I was looking forward to sampling some of the Iocal seafood.

Jimbaran Beach was not far from the temple and the wind was beginning to die down.  I was looking forward to having lunch outside along the beach, enjoying the scenic view of the coast.   A large selection of restaurants lined the shore so I trusted my driver to provide a recommendation.  He suggested the Bawang Merah Beachfront Restaurant where I ordered the red snapper with rice.

Blackened and grilled, my red snapper arrived and I could smell the heat from the spices.  The fish was tender and the rice prepared perfectly.  Enjoying my meal, I reflected on my Balinese vacation over the past two weeks and the amazing memories I had made in such a short period of time.  Sitting along the beach, I thought about how much this opportunity taught me culturally, physically and spiritually.  I made a mental note to take in the scenery at this very moment and promised myself never to take for granted this spectacular journey of a lifetime and promised myself that one day I would return.

Bali had been on my bucket list for years, so taking advantage of the Christmas holiday season, I decided it was time to make the trip.  I wasn’t sure when I would have the opportunity again, so I booked my travel to stay for two weeks starting on New Year’s Eve.  I was taking a chance on the weather because the rainy season is between December and January and trying to find a hotel over New Year’s was proving to be a challenge.

At the last minute, all of my travel plans were confirmed and the day of my flight had finally arrived. What an adventure!

It’s New Year’s Eve and the plane was beginning its approach for landing. The view from my window was a picturesque setting, typical of island life.  The fishing vessels, shrimp boats and scenic cruises scattered along the shoreline and the weather was a balmy 80 degrees.

As I exited the plane, I followed the crowd of passengers into the open air terminal.  Indonesia requires Americans to purchase a 30-day visa which is available on arrival at the airport.  Although the lines were long, the process was quick.  Once I passed through customs, I waited at an outside café to meet up with my cruise ship friend, Wayan Sunarsa and his family.

Trying to reach Wayan by phone, the lines were busy and the traffic was packed.  I later learned that the drive from Singaraja (located in northern Bali) took twice the amount of time to reach the airport because of the New Year’s holiday.  While waiting, at the snack bar,  I ordered a fruity cocktail to start the celebration and enjoyed some downtime watching the crowded terminal.

Located in the Bali’s capital of Denpasar, the Ngurah Rai Airport is adorned with statues representing the island’s Hindu religion. It is conveniently located in the southern part of Bali within minutes of the more popular tourist destinations such as Kuta, Ubud and Jimbaran.  The grounds of the airport were well-manicured with beautiful tropical flowers and palm trees and I could not help taking in my paradisal surroundings.

The stories I had heard about Bali were legendary.  Laid-back and friendly, this extraordinary, Indonesian island offers spectacular scenery, phenomenal food and a fascinating culture.  Indonesia is predominantly Muslim except for the island of Bali which is Hindu.  Bali is a magnificent paradise where temples suspend from scenic mountainsides and sacrifices line the streets giving thanks to their Hindu gods.

Most people are familiar with the Bali that is depicted in movies like Eat, Pray, Love.  Of course the scenery is breathtaking, but the people of Bali have an exuberant passion for life.  In addition to the sites of the island, I wanted to explore their Hindu way of life through religious celebrations, monuments and everyday traditions.  I was excited to meet up with the Sunarsas who were happy to show me around South Bali during the New Year’s celebration.

We finished dinner, watched the fireworks and enjoyed the festivities along the beach.  Although it was late, Wayan and his family wanted to show me Wisnu Park in the nearby town of Ulu Watu.   Known for its enormous statue of the Hindu god Garuda, the park is open each day and provides year around entertainment.

We would need to start driving north towards Lovina early in the morning, so we found the Hard Rock Hotel in Kuta and checked in. It was a long day of travel for me and I was exhausted.  I fell asleep quickly but not before thinking about the fact that I had just spent New Year’s Eve in Bali!  I was so happy to be starting the new year in such a beautiful place. Happy New Year!  Or as they say in Bali, Tahun Baru!

Mammoth Springs, An Apocalyptic Fairytale

Arriving into Mammoth Hot Springs, there was a large crowd of visitors standing around the center of town.  From a distance it was difficult to see what was taking place downtown, but as I drove closer, I noticed a large bull elk and his harem.  Roaming the Parade Lawn were about twenty beautiful females.

The crowd began to push in and as they moved closer to the elk, a park ranger warned the group to move away from the herd.  Clearly ignoring the warning sign placards, guests seemed to have forgotten that bull elks can become unpredictable when provoked and dangerous if startled.  I thought it best to leave the potentially dangerous situation and decided to explore the Hot Springs of Yellowstone.

Situated at the north end of Yellowstone, Mammoth sits at an elevation of over 6,000 feet.  One of the most photographed areas of the park, it is known for its multi-layered colors created by volcanic chemicals.

The orange limestone terraces glowing in the sunlight were bold in comparison to the white chalky substance. Created by algae and bacteria, there is a strong contrast between the colors that stand out from the rest of the scene.  A continuous mist was rising up from the stepping stones as if to reach the sun and stars.  Unlike the other features in the park,  the view seemed as though I had just landed on another planet.

The scenes of the park took my breath away.  A lone tree sprouted up from the white limestone against the blue sky creating an image that could only be painted by a surrealist.   As if rising out of a fairytale book,  I was sure that nymphs or sprites could appear at any moment.

Located on the Upper Terrace of Mammoth Springs is the New Blue Springs.  Without one speck of blue to be seen, this monochromatic contrast with colors of white and orange would seem most likely to exist on planet Mars.

Approaching the last formations of limestone,  I found this area to be one of the most unique collection of springs.  Unequivocally unique in its design, they are one of the many reasons that four million visitors arrive in Yellowstone National Park each year.

Summer is the busiest time for the park you may find road construction and traffic.

A First Impression of Yellowstone National Park

The sky was a bountiful blue and the air smelled fresh and pure.  The drive from Cody to the entrance of Yellowstone National Park took only about an hour, but there were a couple of stops in between.  The sun was just rising as I passed through tunnels, taking in the hills, trees and streams of the countryside.  It was a perfect day to explore Yellowstone and I was thrilled beyond measure for the adventure ahead.

As the entrance sign came into view, I couldn’t believe I had finally arrived. I was excited to take my place in line with fellow travelers for my first photograph of America’s First National Park, Yellowstone.  Forging on, I was prepared for my first stop at the  Fishing Bridge, when I noticed the beauty of Sylvan Lake as I  pulled over to the side of the road to map out my day.  Yellowstone Lake was not far in the distance and soon I would be exploring one of the most amazing national parks in the United States.  With its vast geological features and abundant animal sightings, this trip was sure to provide endless memories in the making.

Known as the “largest high-altitude lake in North America”, Yellowstone Lake measures 136 square miles.  Because the southern road of the park was closed for the season, I had to drive north towards Yellowstone’s Grand Canyon. Just inside LaHardy, I saw my first large bull elk wandering through the brush on the side of the road.

The pungent scent of rotting eggs, caused by the sulper springs, filled the air, far in advance of my approach to Mud Volcano.  The bubbling mud pots, considered one of the most unstable properties within the park, was proof of the park’s volcanic power.  With names such as Dragon’s Mouth Spring or Sulphur Cauldron, the 2.3 mile boardwalk winds through several active thermal features.   It was a reminder that I was standing on a volcano that could erupt at any moment.

Looking forward to reaching the park’s most impressive waterfall, I passed through Hayden Valley.  I stopped at several lookouts for wildlife as well as random falls throughout the park when I had finally reached the Falls of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.  It was a breathtaking scene as the cascade, with its 308 foot precipice, could be heard long before reaching the overlook.

I arrived at a split in the road, with one leading to the North Rim and the other to the South.  I had decided to hike Uncle Tom’s Trail for a closer look at the Upper Falls as well as Crystal Falls, plummeting 129 feet.  Since the late 1800s, visitors to Yellowstone have made this trek with help from Tom Richardson, independent tour guide.  As a part of his full day excursion, the rim of the falls included a “trail of wooden ladders and handrails to the mist of Lower Falls”.  Today a metal staircase with 329 steps has replaced the ladders that once led to the lookout.

I stood at the overlook for several minutes admiring the mesmerizing beauty of the cascades.  The water violently flowed beneath into the canyon.  While this was the first excursion I had taken within the park, I realized I had not even begun to explore Yellowstone.  This amazing national park offers so many opportunities to see nature in its own habitat, from geysers, waterfalls, wildlife and wonder.

Santorini: Life on a Volcano

Arriving by sea, the cruise ship pushed forward, edging closer to dramatic views of whitewashed villages atop Santorini’s crescent-shaped caldera.  The scenic view of watching the island appear between the islands of Sikinos and Ios is breathtaking.  Undeniably one of the most beautiful islands in the world,  Santorini’s history, scenic views and whitewashed buildings are incredibly fascinating, but it is the island’s gorgeous sunsets that make the “Devil’s Isle” worth a stop in the Cyclades.

Santorini  is one of a group of islands that includes the isles of Santorini and Therasia, while the uninhabited islets of New Kameni and  Palaia Kameni (the “Burnt Isles”), Aspronisi (“White Isle) and Christiana are great for day hiking.   Surviving one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history, what remains of Santorini are the steep 1100 feet cliffs and the water-filled caldera.

When the island was first established, it was appropriately named Kallisti which means the “the most beautiful one”.  By the thirteenth century, the  Empire of Romania renamed the island Santorini after Saint Irene of Thessoloniki, who was martyred in the 4th century BC.   Locals may refer to the island as Thera, which became its official name in the 19th century.

To confuse matters a little, Santorini’s capital is also Thera (Fira), located on the northern side of the island.  The town of Oia, with its whitewashed houses and colorful domes, displays the typical scenery that one sees in travel magazines and photographs.D5 Heading up the volcano

Anchoring within the cove of the caldera, passengers boarded the ship’s tender offering transportation to the south end of the island, the New Port at Athinios.

After researching the opportunities available on Santorini, I decided to purchase the ship’s excursion which included a stop at the archaeological site of Akrotiri, a Greek-inspired lunch and then sunset in Fira.  That morning, the tour group boarded the bus and our driver began the steep climb up the side of the cliffs.  As the bus rounded the corner,  I could see the cruise ships in the harbor and, in the distance, the smaller islands in the caldera.D5 Akrotiri Ruins

As we entered The Museum of Prehistoric Thera, I had not imagined the complexity of the archaeological dig.  I was impressed that the site was enclosed under a large structure, which was built to protect the ancient ruins.  Unlike many excavations, the structures, streets and artifacts were intact and in pristine condition.D5 Beautiful City with Volcano Backdrop

Boarding the bus, I was left thinking about how terrifying it would have been for the Santorinians during the time of the volcanic explosion and was relieved to think that they were smart enough to leave town before the event.

Next, we had the lovely pleasure of spending time in the picturesque town of Oia (or Ia) which is located at the northern tip of the island.  Oia’s charm is seen in its white-washed buildings and gorgeous bougainvillea making it the most photographed village of the Aegean. Walking through Santorini’s second-largest town, I noticed the beautiful whitewashed fences, narrow passageways and staircases that disappeared into restaurants and hotels. Searching for the central square, there were gorgeous views of the cobalt sea and rust-colored lava cliffs in the distance.

White washed churches with their stunning blue domes are the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Santorini.  The charming combination actually keeps the buildings cool over the hot summer months.

After learning about the local cave houses, I found the Laskarina’s Old Bakery Cave House in Oia.  I had plenty of time to stop by to explore this gorgeous home before finding a restaurant to try the local wine.  Carved into the rocks on top of the cliff, some of these beautiful structures have remained here for many years.  This amazing location was once a bakery and the interior and decor were completely stunning. I easily found an authentic Greek restaurant that offered all of the local dishes and was interested in sampling the world-renowned  wines of Santorini where the grapes are grown in volcanic ash.  I ordered  the tzatziki sauce with pita bread and a glass of Aryitiko, the island’s popular dry white wine.  My second glass of wine was  the Vinsanto, which is a  sweeter white, produced from dried grapes at Gavalas a local winery in Megalochori.   Santorinian wines are served in some of the most upscale restaurants in the world and I knew I had to buy a few bottles. 130903, D5 Cliff Homes in Oia, Santorini

The dramatic cliffs provided several opportunities to witness a bird’s eye view of the town.  The awnings, walkways and balconies along the side streets piqued my interest as I strayed away from the main street to enjoy the extraordinary scenery.  Wandering the streets, I could easily lose myself among the unique landscape with scenic views all around me.

Oia is full of surprises and one of them is the Venetian Kasteli (Castle) of Agios Nikolas.  Built in the Middle Ages, as a beautiful church carved in the side of the rock, it also served as a lookout point.  Much of the structure was damaged in the earthquake of 1956 and only the Goulas (watchtower) exists.   It is one of many ideal locations to watch the sunset.

Another gem located below the town of Oia, at the base of the cliff, is the Harbour of Amoudi.   From Oia, there are 300 stairs that reach the harbor, known for its red lava cliffs.

From the Harbour of Amoudi,  the ferry service takes tourists out to the islet of Therasia.  A piece of land untouched by tourism and commercialization, the landscape draws hikers and adventurers.  Within fifteen minutes, tourists can experience an authentic Theran village and view the caldera from a different perspective.

What remains of the volcano wraps around to create a semi-circular basin.  The spectacular formation of the caldera dominates the view at every angle and I wondered how it would have looked before the eruption.

Taking in the sunset in Fira is highly recommended, but not before we lunched at Restaurant Iris.  We boarded the bus for a short ride and arrived at the restaurant to enjoy a buffet of Greek food and desserts.  Since I had already eaten, I had a lovely conversation with our tour guide who was happy to give me an insight to the current economic situation in Greece.   We had a lovely dining experience and looked forward to winding down our day where we would witness one of the most spectacular sunsets in all of the world.

Fira is located close to the cruise ships dock and is the starting point for most tourists visiting the island.  The town has made it very easy to find the perfect location to enjoy the sunset although it can be more crowded than Oia at sunset.  From this vantage point, the structures built into the lava cliffs provide a breathtaking backdrop and view.

Several options are available to reach the town of Fira.  For the adventurous, brave and strong, a set of 587 stairs reach the top.  This is also the way of the donkeys, so if one does not mind sharing the route with donkeys, there are no lines and no waiting.  Riding up the cliff on a donkey-for-hire is another possibility as long as the mule is not stubborn.

Cable car rides run every 20 minutes and takes only a couple of minutes to go up or down.   Each car transports 36 people at a time and is very convenient, quick way to travel.  The cost is 6 Euros one way and there may be a wait, especially when cruise ships are in port.

The town has made it very easy to find a cliffside, seaside spot to enjoy the sunset and there are many more options here in the energetic village of Fira.   Fellow cruise ship passengers waited for the spectacular show as the sun began to hide behind a piece of the caldera.  We watched in awe as the sunlight reflected off of the iconic Clycladic architecture.

Undeniably, the view from Santorini a couple of hours before sunset is phenomenal.  As the sun slowly disappears behind the caldara, the sun’s light dances upon the cove below and reflects off of the cliffs and islands to create a magnificent pink glow.

No one can deny that Santorini is magical, spectacular and everything in between.  Picturesque at every turn, the island is one of the most scenic and enchanting of the Greek isles.  What a beautiful opportunity to capture the essence of Fira at twilight.  I could have stood in this moment forever but this moment of awe would soon come to an end.

Moving towards the cable cars, I looked back at the extraordinary scene.  I couldn’t help but contemplate if the ancient Greeks knew that they were living among one of  the most beautiful landscapes in the world.   I think I have found my Atlantis.

Cruise Ship Shore Excursion in St. Lucia, The Scenic Drive, Part 1

In the harbor,  the cruise ship was tucked into a little cove at Pointe Seraphine.  We had just arrived in St. Lucia where we were surrounded by sailboats and speed boats.  Wanting to see as much of the island as possible, I signed up for a ship’s excursion which included a tour of the island by bus and then a return trip back to the ship by Catamaran.  I couldn’t wait to start my day.

I boarded the bus and the journey began in Castries, the island’s capital.  The bus was full of passenger as we passed Derek Walcott Square.  Our driver explained that we were in the center of town and he pointed out a large samaan tree which is said to be over 400 years old.

As the road continued upwards, there were twists and turns where we caught glimpses of the cruise ship through the trees.   Heading south, we passed The 1895 Government House, home to the Governor-General of St. Lucia.

On the winding road towards Soufriere, the bus took a moment for us to stop at Marigot Bay, one of the most beautiful views of the island.  There was a lookout with a small shop where we could pick up some water, local food items or a Piton beer made in St. Lucia.  We had some time to shop and then reboarded the bus to our next scenic view.

The road descended from the picturesque views of Marigot Bay to the volcanic shores of a local  fishing village.  Stopping for an opportunity to shop and wander the streets of the town, we decided to venture out onto the pier for a short stroll.

Once a week, the town hosts a fish fry for locals and visitors but it is their celebration of Carnivale for which they are best known.  Similar to Mardi Gras in New Orleans, visitors from the surrounding islands arrive in flamboyant costumes and dance in the streets for a week-long party.    There are several murals painted on the walls that show elements of the festivities.

According to our tour guide, we had one last stop to take in the million dollar view of the Pitons and to shop for souvenirs.  The two peaks, majestically rising out from the ocean, seem to protect the charming little port town below.   Our next stop takes us to the Diamond Botanical Garden before boarding the catamaran back to the ship.

Reserving a two bedroom villa, I did not want to leave my private pool, but the grounds and accommodations at Windjammer Landing were absolutely gorgeous.

Embers at Windjammer Landing was my favorite place to dine for lunch.  The pulled pork flatbread was perfectly spiced with jalapeno peppers and pepper jack cheese.  I also enjoyed the Ember’s Fish Tacos, with garlic aioli and pineapple salsa.

For an incredible steak and seafood dinner, I highly recommend the local conch chowder and the grilled filet mignon at the Upper Deck Restaurant at the resort.

For a more casual atmosphere and menu, offering salads, soups and burgers, Jammer’s beachside restaurant is the perfect spot for a quick, delicious bite.

To sample some of the local island cuisine, I suggest the Tuesday night Caribbean buffet at Dragonfly which offers  a wide selection island flavors from St. Lucian soups to their national dish Green Fig and Salt Fish.

  • Bouyon – beef soup with dumplings but other meats can substitute for beef
  • Callaloo soup – made with seafood or cuts of meat, okra, potatoes and garlic

  • Pemme – cornmeal, pumpkin, cinnamon, sugar and dry coconut leaves then wrapped in banana leaves
  • Pepperpot  – Caribbean dish made from onion, garlic, cinnamon, brown sugar, thyme, cloves, orange peel, cassareep and meat
  • Smoked herring and breadfruit – breadfruit is cooked until tender

An Afternoon Wine Tasting in Tuscany

During a fall trip to the Mediterranean, I was looking forward to visiting the Tuscany region of Italy.  I had booked a seven-day cruise on the Pullmantur Sovereign and decided to experience the rolling hills of vineyards on an excursion sponsored by the ship.  The opportunity to sample the Italian wines outside of Florence was an unforgettable experience and from that point forward, I became fascinated by the wines of Italy from Chianti to Sangiovese.

The day was absolutely beautiful for a morning in Pisa then a short bus ride to the Tuscan region of Lucca.  Famous for its wine and spectacular countryside, vineyards of Semillon and Pinot Bianco grapes surrounded us as the bus arrived at Fattoria il Poggio.

Fattoria means “farm” in Italian and the il Poggio is what the Italians refer to as an agritourismo, otherwise known as a farm stay.  Farm stays are  perfect for guests who are interested in immersing themselves in the local culture based in an agricultural setting. In most cases, the restaurants at a fattoria will incorporate the “farm to table” concept using its own fresh produce and meats.

With voracious appetites, we were eager to sample the local wines as well as the olive oil produced by the farm.  This beautiful eco-tourismo exports seven red and white wines as well as a variety of olive oils and balsamic vinegar.

We arrived to elegantly prepared tables draped in white linen tablecloths where empty wine glasses patiently waited to be filled.  Our host welcomed us to Fattoria il Poggio as servers filled our tables with copious bottles of wine and antipasti.  I could not wait to indulge in the estate wines, snack on locally prepared meats and cheeses and enjoy some of the finest ingredients organically grown at the farm.

The hospitality at Fattoria il Poggio was exceptional, the scenery mesmerizing and the food was more than outstanding.  Enjoying the generous portions set before us, we learned so much about the daily farm activities as well as how their products are made.

The wine pours were flowing and there were plenty of meats, cheeses, bread and olives.  Served family style, I can assure you that no one left hungry and not a drop of wine was left in the bottles.  What an amazing way to spend the afternoon.

We were offered six wines to sample as well as the wide range of items produced at the farm.  Fattoria Il Poggio has been making high quality wines since 1845 as well as growing fruits and medicinal herbs.  These items were available for purchase at the gift shop where other wine related souvenir items were sold as well.

A day in Tuscany is certainly not enough time to visit the region of remarkable wines which has made such an impact on the country’s culture.  With seven World Heritage Sites and endless charming villages, this area is one of the most visited in Italy.

Should guests decide to book a stay at Fattoria il Poggio, luxury  accommodations include such amenities as WiFi, satellite TV, floor heating, a private spa and a rooftop pool.  Additional services include local tours,  onsite events and cooking classes.  The il Poggio is the ideal location for wedding ceremonies, anniversaries and other monumental celebrations.

What to Eat: 

  • Bistecca alla Fiorentina is a T-bone steak with the filet on one side and sirloin on the other.
  • Cacciucco is a fish soup dish from the port towns of Livorno and Viareggio.
  • Castagnaccio is a cake made from chestnut flour.
  • Crostini Toscani is bread topped with chopped liver sauce.
  • Lampredotto sandwich is made from the fourth stomach of a cow served in broth and served with a spicy sauce.
  • Lardo di Colonnata is cured pork meat.
  • Panzanella is a bread soup served cold made from bread, tomatoes, onion, basil, olive oil and vinegar.
  • Pappa al pomodoro is a simple soup made of tomatoes, garlic, and basil leaves served with stale bread.
  • Ribollita is a soup made with cabbage, beef, carrots and onion.

Photographing Inniswood Metro Gardens, Columbus

My first experience at Inniswood was shortly after I bought my new Nikon D3100 camera.  I wanted to find a park where I could photograph nature, scenery and interesting creatures to broaden my portfolio.  Looking for the chance to shoot macro, wide angle and experiment creatively, I could not believe all of the fabulous photo opportunities at this park.

Practicing some of the tips I had read in my camera’s manual, I was ready to explore the aperture and shutter priority settings.  I came upon a bee flying around the flowers as I walked the tour.  I waited for the right moment to frame the insect between the flowers and was eager to experiment with creating blurred images, focusing on the bee and the flower.  Set on aperture, I adjusted the F-stop to f/5.6 and the exposure time to 1/40 sec.  There was plenty of sunlight, so my ISO speed was perfectly set at 100 and my lens’ focal length was 55mm.  It took me several shots, but in the end I was very pleased with the outcome.

I was so excited to see the waterfall because I could practice using the shutter priority setting, allowing me the chance to practice another photography skill.   It took me several attempts before I found a shot that satisfied me, but I enjoyed the challenge and the result of freezing the waterfall perfectly.

I left the F-stop at f/5.6 and the exposure time was changed to 1/20 sec.  There was plenty of sunlight, so my ISO speed was perfectly set at 100 and my lens’ focal length was 55mm.  My exposure bias was +0.7 step.   I was pleasantly surprised with how well this photo turned out.

+110730 Interesting Stigma and Style

For my first shots, I have to say that they came out fairly well.  The image viewer on the back of the camera was not large enough to give me an accurate assessment of each photo.  For example, I really thought I had captured the circular tips on the stigma of my flower, but in the end, they were still a little blurry.  I hope that as I practice, I will become accustomed to improving the clarity of my shots and will learn to make the proper adjustments for shooting better photos.

Towards the end of my walk, I started to take some photos without setting up the shots.  Surprisingly, I had a couple that turned out to be some of my most interesting and favorite shots.   I shot this photo in aperture priority, with an F-stop of f/5.6, exposure time:  1/60 sec., an ISO speed of 200 using the 55mm focal length.  There was an exposure bias set at +0.3 step.  It seemed to one of those photos that I would never be able to recreate.

My favorite photo of the whole afternoon was taken at dusk when this tiny little raccoon peeked out from the brush as I was exiting the park.  The park ranger noticed him as well and was trying to encourage him back into the woods.  He allowed me a quick opportunity to photograph him, but of course, the grass was in the way of the shot.  I hope that someday in the future I will be able to learn how to modify photos with software to preserve some of the great moments that did not turn out so well. And until then, I will continue to photograph all manners of landscape, animals, and architecture just for the joy of photography.

One of my favorite menu items at Northstar is the Thai Burrito with roasted chicken, peanut sauce, crunchy slaw and brown rice served with a Thai dipping sauce and tortilla chips.  When dining with a larger group, I prefer the Margherita Pizza with organic tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil and shaved Grana Padano.

  • The Thurman Cafe:  The Thurmanator is the burger of all burgers at this longtime local cafe in German Village.  There may be a wait all burgers are made to order.
  • Schmidt’s Sausage Haus and Restaurant:  While the sausage at Schmidt’s is the official food of Columbus, it’s the amazing Cream Puffs that have the locals lining up at the door.
