From Ordinary to Extraordinary: The Food at The Merchant House

17 November 201616 September 2024

1 IMG_2100

Recommended by Louisa at Kennedy Vineyards, I was eager to dine at The Merchant House in nearby Greenville, Ohio.  There was hardly a seat in the house, so I took a place at the bar, which was just as busy.  The bartender, Joanne, recommended a great wine and took my order for Pig Candy as a starter.   Enjoying my glass of bold red, I took my time admiring the rustic, contemporary architecture and looked over the menu.  The exposed brick and hardwood beams added to the charm of this popular new restaurant.

2 IMG_2101

As my appetizer arrived, I could smell the smokiness of the spices along with the sweetness of the brown sugar.  My first bite was the perfect blend of nutmeg, allspice and cinnamon and I could have honestly placed another order, it was that extraordinary.

3 IMG_2102

The Merchant House has a gift for taking ordinary food items and turning them into delectable gourmet dishes,  The combinations are unique such as fried chicken & mac n’ cheese waffles.

Butter burgers, seafood jambalaya and BBQ are some of the restaurant’s most popular dishes, but I had my eye on the Monte Cristo sandwich.  All I could think about was a crispy, deep fried sandwich to dip into homemade strawberry preserves.  This “thick cut ham, turkey and Swiss cheese sandwich between two pieces of Texas toast” is “dipped in egg batter, breaded, then deep fried golden brown.” The sweet potatoes fries were billowy with a lovely light texture and seasoned perfectly.

4 IMG_2111

The Head Chef of the restaurant, Eric, was taking a break and took a seat next to me at the bar.  Joanne, who is married to Eric, explained that they had recently moved to the area from Detroit to help start the restaurant.  Since the age of fifteen, they have both been working in restaurants which is where they met Chris and Cassie Campbell, co-owners of The Merchant House. Joanne is also a talented baker opening up her own business, the Delightfully Decadent Bakery while Eric enjoys creating new recipes exploring unique flavor combinations.  Many of his creations are listed on the menu.

5 IMG_2113

I had the opportunity to take some photographs of the restaurant, pay my bill and exchanged contact information with Eric and Joanne.  Eric was kind enough to introduce me to Cassie and her family and I thanked them for their  hospitality, wishing them great success.  I know that I will be making a return visit and can’t wait to try the restaurant’s Chicago-style pizza, which will be added to the menu next month.

Have you had the opportunity to visit The Merchant House in Greenville?  What menu item did you choose?  I would love to hear from you if you would kindly leave your comments below.  Many thanks for reading about my delightful dining experience at The Merchant House and wishing you many Happy Travels!

I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Eric and Joanne for their generous hospitality and time during my visit at the Merchant House.  Please note that all comments and opinions are my own.

Visiting KitchenAid for its Annual August Sale

26 March 201614 December 2024

It was a beautiful day in August and I drove the hour and a half commute to downtown Greenville, Ohio to check out the KitchenAid Experience retail center.  I have a love for all things KitchenAid and was so surprised to learn that this amazing brand was actually made in my home state of Ohio.

As soon as I stepped inside, I was salivating from the selection of exceptional kitchen products in so many colors.  KitchenAid products were first introduced to the public in 1919 with the development of the stand mixer. An idea, developed by engineer Herbert Johnston, this appliance became the “best kitchen aid” a woman could have ever had.

For a time, I envied every woman who had a KitchenAid mixer.  I saved for two years to purchase one for myself in hopes of making the perfect meringue and whipped mashed potatoes.  I was more excited now to browse through all of the attachments for my mixer and any additional appliances that would match my new toy.

Visitors are also invited to attend cooking demonstrations and events revolved around the art of cooking and baking. With the help of KitchenAid products, attendees can learn how to create every day meals to gourmet dishes to bring out the true chef in everyone.  Check out their online schedule for classes which are offered on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Viewing the KitchenAid’s complete line of bakeware, cookware and cutlery, I decided to make my way to the basement to check out some of their refurbished items on sale.  I was also excited to learn more about the KitchenAid brand by visiting their downstairs museum.

The KitchenAid Stand Mixer were initially made for commercial bakers.  At the Greenville plant, the mixer for home use was produced in 1919, weighing in at 68 pounds.  The museum displays original stand mixers and shows its evolution from its early prototypes to the most recent designs available in stores today.

One of my favorite stops at the museum was the Julia Child’s Stand Mixer display.

The 1,000,000 gold plated mixer

While the KitchenAid brand has been producing their legendary stand mixer for years, today, visitors can leave with a number of products for the home cook.  From blenders to toasters and in between, the KitchenAid Experience is a great way to purchase one of the world’s best known kitchen products and attend a cooking demonstration to learn more about their additional offerings.

The Old Arcana, Arcanum Ohio – NOW CLOSED

9 July 201531 August 2024

UPDATE:  The Old Arcana is now CLOSED.

IMG_8815

What initially drew me to The Old Arcana Restaurant was their Bourbon Praline French Toast, which was voted the best by Ohio Magazine.  I was also interested in visiting Bear’s Mill in Greenville, so I combined the two for a pleasant morning in Darke County, Ohio.   Passing through cornfields and small country towns, my GPS guided me to Arcanum with its red brick streets and charming antique shops.

IMG_8813

The beautiful interior was rich with exposed brick walls, dark wood furnishings and simple, yet elegant table settings.  The bar is the main attraction displaying the homemade desserts in the glass enclosure at the front, while in the back, servers are ringing up orders and pouring their customer’s beverages.

IMG_8810

The menu offered a long list of Southern-style entrees with a few healthy options as well.  My eyes were drawn to the sausage gravy and biscuits, three egg omelets with herb roasted potatoes or an order of pancakes and homemade syrup.

Lunch and dinner selections included comfort foods such as the Kentucky Hot Brown and burgers of fresh meat made from brisket.  All menu items are made in-house with fresh ingredients purchased from local markets and farmers.

A unique list of starters such as falafel fries, deviled eggs and Reuben rolls, and an excellent selection of salads ranged in price from $6 to $8.  While each item looked delicious, I was not swayed away from the Bourbon Praline French Toast.

IMG_8814

As Janeen brought my meal to  the table, I could smell the sweetness of the bourbon praline sauce and the candied pecans.  Coupled with the subtle aroma of cinnamon and homemade whipped cream, I could not wait to dive in.  Taking my first bite, I have to admit it tasted more like a dessert than breakfast.    This rich cinnamon creation, loaded with pecan goodness, was sinfully delicious.

IMG_8820

All desserts at The Old Arcana are made from scratch and the selection changes on a regular basis.  Behind the counter, there was the carrot cake bread pudding, devil’s food cake, their signature banana pudding, strawberry tart parfait and their chocolate cake with strawberry icing. The temptation was overwhelming, but having had the decadent French toast, I was going to have to pass and plan for dessert on my next visit.

IMG_8817

Janeen mentioned that her brother Jeff Besecker was the owner and successful self-taught chef behind some of the most amazing menu items.  Her father was instrumental in the renovations of the restaurant, adding some personal touches such as the bench seating along the wall opposite the bar. The restaurant sells some of her father’s beautifully designed walnut and brown maple cutting boards as well as sycamore rolling pins.

IMG_8822

After settling my check, I was determined to return soon for another of the restaurant’s top sellers, the Arcana Hot Brown.  The Old Arcana Restaurant ranks high on my list of restaurants in the state of Ohio and is a hidden gem located in the farmlands of Darke County.  Of course, the next time, I will definitely save room for dessert.

Have you had the opportunity to dine at The Old Arcana Restaurant?  I would love to hear about your experience or to recommend any restaurant items that you have tried if you would kindly leave your comments below!  Many thanks for reading about my experience at The Old Arcana Restaurant and wishing you many Happy Travels!

Where to Eat:

The Old Arcana Restaurant
109 W. George Street
Arcanum, OH  45304
Telephone:   937  692 0068

The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and accepts cash only for payment.   The Old Arcana Restaurant also offers cooking classes, which are provided on their webpage.  In March of 2016, they began a Supper Club to bring like minded foodies together to enjoy a meal in a slow, engaging environment.  This is also an opportunity to meet the chef, the staff and “hear their inspiration behind the  month’s dish”.  Information about becoming a member of the Supper Club is also listed on their website.
